Yep, another one of my rants. So beware, I may come off sounding a bit negative in some parts.
Overrated anime.
We all know what it is. Those anime that get too much praise and attention. That's not what bothers me, it's those people who do get bothered by it......that bothers me.
I'll explain, using Naruto as an example.
We all may avoid a certain anime for some reason. Should it be because you don't like the genre, or maybe because you don't like the art style. Or it could be because of it's fandom, or maybe because it's overrated.
Is anyone catching on? @_@
My point here is that I get upset when people say things like "Argh, I hate that anime, it's so overrated!" (ok, maybe not that harsh, but you get it). I honestly didn't want to watch Utena because I didn't like the art style. But people said it was a good anime, so I would like to see it, but I have no way to.
And I didn't think I would like Naruto. I actually thought it looked...boring. Since I don't like action all that much. But it turned out I loved it!
Yes, Naruto is overrated, but it does deserve some of it's praise, because it really is a good series! After I had finally seen the anime, in all honestly I'll say the animation looked strange in some parts...o_O Especially Sakura's hands in the lastest ending...
Argh...I feel like I'm straining from the point...
Ok, basically:
People who hate an anime simply because of it's fandom or because it's overrated, really annoys me. If you like an anime, WATCH IT. Who the hell cares if it's overrated? If you like, does it affect your viewing pleasures? If it does, I really would like to know how.
Argh...I wonder if I made any sense. If anyone got my point, kudos to you.

Wow, this is just like me. I kinda avoided stuff like One Piece, Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Inuyasha, because they were so overrated, but when I finally just sat down and watched, or read, them, I was immediately under their spell...
Although, I still think Inuyasha is overrated, especially, in RPs, because nobody wants to do anything else but it...
Anyways, I think I got your point...

Why don't we make this thread for anime's that ARE actually a bit overrated too? =3 I can name a few...
One Piece...maybe i should read more of it, but i read a bit of the first book and it just...i just didnt like it. I'm not saying it sucks...i just didn't like it.
Stellvia- They raved about it in one of the anime magazines...Anime Insider or Animerica....i HATED IT, it was boring, i couldnt even watch the whole dvd.
Meh...can't think of anymore...x.x
And yeah...watch/read a anime/manga before you judge it.....o___O I didn't like Utena at first cause i thought it looked weird...but then i read it and fell in love with the art and story itself, its one of the best and its my favorite manga ^^

I don't know if this is the same for anyone else, but when a series is mega-popular like Inuyasha or Naruto, I tend to not want to watch not because its over-rated or anything but because its too popular. When I watch something that's exteremly popular, it makes me feel like I'm only watching it only for the sake of popularity and not because I actually like it. So, I usually tend to avoid series like that or wait until their popularity dies down. For example, when Escaflowne was first released in the U.S. it was exteremly popular and it seemed like everybody raved about it, so I didn't watch it until just about a year or two ago when the popularity had died down. And even though I liked Escaflowne, I must admit that I didn't think it was as epic as everyone said it was.....I liked it and all...it just.... never drew me into its universe.

Usually if an anime gets rave reviews by fans I like to watch it before I go around praising it. For example, Eva, I finally watched the show and absolutely hated it. I will never watch it again, I can't believe I watched the entire thing. I still don't know why people love this show...
On the opposite of that, I love Naruto, not because of it being popular. But I probably would have never heard of the show without it being popular.
I agree though that most shows are a bit overrated by fans. I even think Naruto is overrated even though I find it to be a very good show. And I think Eva is WAY overrated in my opinion.

I don't like the phrase "overrated". MOST of the time, anime gets good reviews because it's GOOD. There are exceptions, as in everything, but that usually holds true. If everyone likes something, that's because it has a wide appeal, which makes it, in a one sense, a very good show. Embrace popular shows just like you would unpopular ones. Hakuna Matata, man.

I have the feeling this thread is vaugley directed towards me *laughs*. Well, that's alright. ACTUALLY, Concerning Naruto, I DO have a defense. I'm sure you Naruto fans will tear me down anyways but... Well, first, let me start out by saying that I'm not actually a fan of shounen fighting anime in general. One Piece and Shaman King are the only exceptions, and that's because both series have strong group dynamics and a sense of humor that is similar to mine (odd timing.) For me the MOST important thing in ANY media (videogames, movies, anime, manga...) is characters. Character is actually more important to me than story. Now, I've read the first few books of Naruto, and well, I just don't like the characters. The main three I mean, Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke. I just don't feel they have a good group dynamic. I liked Sakura at first, but her constant meanness to Naruto (even when she's KIND of nice, she's still mean.) Her adoration of Sasuke above all else just got annoying. Naruto himself is... o.k. He's actually a typical shounen hero. Sasuke. I don't like the ANGST type of character. Well, that is, unless the creator knows to poke fun at them. Sure, I realise he probably has his reasons, but it's a bit too much. This is also why I don't like Squall from FFVII (though Squall had a STUPID reason for being so overly angsty: .) Anyhoo, each of these characters probably wouldn't be so bad if in a different sort of group, but together.... Well, I just don't find they interact well. And that distracts ME from the overall story. Also, characters who you are SUPPOSED to care about, I just kind of... don't.... in this series. Now, I'll come out and say it. Obsessive fans for this series VERY MUCH get on my nerves. That, and for some reason, some of them like to put down One Piece even if the've seen NONE of the manga or the anime 0_o . And yeah, I'll admit that right now I haven't seen much of the Naruto anime do to both my experiences with the manga and my experiences with the NaruFans. This isn't to say that I won't watch the series some day though. I have a feeling this series will get an uncut dvd release, so I'm just going to wait and rent that. Oh yes, one more random fact, I actually own a Naruto plushie. So I guess I can't say that I HATE the series ^_~ . Hunter x Hunter is another case example of group dynamics. It's slow at first, then it gets interesting, and then a few characters leave and it gets boring, the characters come back and the series gets DELIGHTFULLY dark. Then a few characters leave again and Gon becomes an ass. Seriously. I left the series because I just couldn't take the remaining characters anymore . Now to be fair, even though I LOVE Fullmetal Alchemist, The crazy fans for that series get on my nerves sometimes too. When FMA was first announced as liscenced... never in my life had I wanted to injure such a large group of people >_< . Boards everywhere were FILLED with FMA "fans" badmouthing the company, and crying "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!". Grrrrrr.... I'm still bitter. Now, you may be thinking that Lovely won't watch a show if it is "popular". Ah! but this is not so! I actually started a few series because of their popularity. Those series would be, "Cowboy Bebop" which I didn't expect to like, but I did. And "One Piece" which I REEEEAAAALLY didn't expect to like but I ended up loving. Yes, for One Piece the first arcs are ... odd. But the voice acting and music is great and the group dynamics are WONDERFUL. EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing to add. I too don't actually like the term "over rated". If a person likes a show, they like a show. It's not really there personal fault that SO many others like a show. And that a select annoying few are the most vocal about it. I actually feel a bit sorry for intelligent fans of certain series. They must get tired of trying to change the bad impressions that the annoying fans drop everywhere!

Lovely, the Naruto fans aren't going to tear you apart for what you said. XD Because what you said is somewhat true. Sakura is sometimes very annoying. But she does get better later on...she's just too obsessed with Sasuke. >< Later in the series, she's a lot more kind to Naruto. Sasuke....>< that bastard....*cough* Sorry, latest episode kicking in. >> Well, I personally don't like Sasuke. xD And he isn't really...angsty per say. He's power hungry. So he gets all "argh" because he wants to be more strong than Naruto, so whenever he sees Naruto do something he can't, he gets all loony. Heh, friend of mine told me Sasuke is actually Kishimoto's favorite. XDD The group interaction gets better later on...well...except for Sasuke sometimes, but he's an ass. So meh. >>

You know, I have a theory on the Sasuke thing. Since you're a Gaara fangirl, surely you've seen the episodes in which Gaara and Sasuke fight, and Gaara's transforming?
Well, Kakashi, in a flashback, tells Sasuke that if he forced his third Chidori, it would cause nothing but despair for himself and everyone around him, and I believe that this is connected.

I can really relate to most of the things on this thread. I usually don't rush to see anime's that get loads of reviews or are highly popular over here in the west straight away because they usually ARE highly over-rated, I mean shows like (and no offence to the fans, but I just dont like them) Yugioh, beyblade *shudder* and pokemon I can hardly aknowledge as anime without cringing everytime my little brother watches them (the Tv's in our room sooo...) or whenever people go all "OMGWTFLOLBBQ11!111" over them.
truthfully until three months ago I thought Naruto was extremely overated aswell ( and it probably sorta is) and I swore to God I wouldnt get into this particular manga... well a couple of months onwards I can probanly say that I'm going to Hell but it was worth it ;D
but ya know funny thing is I see lots of cheesy homoerotic undertones in a seemingly innocent show like beyblade. for e.g. the ep. my bother was watching yesterday:
*Tyson is shown kneading Daichi's shoulders* Daichi: what are you doing? Tyson: giving you a massage, its what any good team mate would do.
I was slightly awkward if you ask me but now i understand why Yaoi pairings are so popular for this show.

I agree completely with you Rukato. Beyblade, Pokemon(though it was really good for a time..), and Yugioh(its now just ridiculous ><) are all UBER overrated. beyblade especially, no offense to any Beyblade fans, but i find it incredibly...retarded. -_-;

I will add my vote to Saturns on the fact that EVA is way, way undeserving of it's hype and fandom. I've heard that many people like it...but to still get the worship and I think, 3rd or 4th release of the series in Japan, I can't stand it! Not to say that it's a horrible show, but to elevate it to the pedestal that it has reached, I really don't like that part.
As far as Naruto goes...it's a love or hate thing. I know people with Lovely's opinion, and I know people who go as far as the Eva obessed fanbase(sorry for those of you who like Eva, I'm just using you as an example). I personally like the show, but stays away from one of my favorites, if only because of h...o...w...s...l...o..w..it....mo..v...es. One Piece for some reason I can stand the slow pacing. Maybe because I've watched it slowly from the begining?

I also usually go for the least common pairings in manga/anime too, for example concerning Naruto I'm a NaruSaku fan all the way *dodges rotten fruit thrown by the SasuSaku and NaruHina shippers*. Also I hate that dipstick Sasuke, but ADORE Itachi & Gaara...I guess psycho's appeal to me

Sasuke is undeserving!! o__O yes, he is. I think the oddest couple i like is from YuYu Hakusho, and that would be Yusuke/Yukina...i just think its cute... OMG this is going a bit off topic isn't it? ^^; .. Do we already have a Nauto thread? ;

Yeah, this is getting off topic. Though I can't think of anything to bring it back on topic. ><
There are Naruto threads, but they're all "oh no Naruto dub" threads. There isn't any thread that's simply talking about the series. ...Not saying anyone should make one. >>
And for all I know, once Naruto airs, we'll probably have a "Naruto Premiere" thread as well. >> << >>
