I was watching Power Puff Girls the other day. A robber put on his mask and said to the other guy "Time to work" and loaded his gun.
Now, as we all know it's a cartoon for kids, in a channel for kids, in an hour in which kids will be able to see it.
About a minute ago I was watching Static Shock, and there was a church full of crosses, and they were talking about different religions and stuff, in fact, I can remember the episode when Static said that guns are bad, and there's a lot of talk about guns and shit.
So... why exactly can't anime bear to have guns or crosses? American cartoons do, as a matter of fact, they're kid cartoons, shown at the same hour and day that anime is on. Heck, Static Shock and the PPG were on the WB. So why exactly is anime treated differently? Xenophobia maybe?

Actually, most anime isn't that edited. I mean, look at Gundam, for pete's sake.
And this probably should be in the Anime on TV forum, too.

Still, you reference to things that are on Cartoon Network. I am comparing it to things that are also on Cartoon Network, in comparable timeslots (or have been, as SEED got moved to early Saturday mornings).
Only 4kids seems to feel the need to edit guns and such out of their shows. Other anime that has aired in "child tv hours" as you call it (I'm assuming you're refering to Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons?) has left such things in. When I was a child, NONE of it was edited out at all.

I don't get american Cartoon Network.
And yes, I'm talking specially about 4kids.
But I don't remember much being left in... even though I can't remember most of my childhood.

See, PPG is made BY Cartoon Network, and Static is made by WB, which is affiliated with CN. Not sure exactly when PPG airs (it's on their Friday night block), but Static is aired at 5:30-6pm nightly.

I remember there was an episode of the Ozzy And Drix cartoon where they said "da*n" in one episode. I was so surprised that they actually said a cuss word (even if it was a minor one) on Kid's WB that I nearly fell over. They also said "Hell" in Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but that was refering to the place, not being used in a cussing sense, and there was some actual blood in that movie, too. As for why Japanese animation can't have that stuff in it yet American animation can....Maybe it's because Japanese animation still isn't so popular in the U.S., so they don't want to take any chances of parents suing the companies and preventing more Japanese animation from coming over to the U.S.
However, religion and guns have appeared in edited anime in the U.S. before. In one episode of the Robotech dub of Macross, they showed a statue of Jesus in a church and a bunch of people coming out of the church singing "Silent Night". References to the hour of the beast and the number 666 were mentioned in the dub of Digimon Adventure, and Juri/Jeri was hung up in a cruxific-like position in one episode of Tamers (although it was oddly edited in the next episode). They even said "da*n" in one episode of Tamers. And the scene where Juri/Jeri attempted suicide was sort of left in the dub. They showed her trying to choke herself, but they refused to say the word "die". However, anyone with half of brain could figure out what was going on in that scene.
Then, there was also a Catholic priest who was attacked in the dub of the first season of Sailor Moon, but I don't think they ever actually said he was a priest in the dub, yet it was so obivious that he was. Uranus and Neptune's battle against Eugeal during the S season took place in a cathedral (although the Japanese version called it a church, it's pretty much the same thing), and a Catholic nun was attacked in one episode during the Supers season, although they cut out part of her prayer to God. And Chibi-Usa/Rini turned her Luna-P into a toy gun during the dub of the R movie, which was completely left in, even when it was aired on CN.

I shall turn everyone's attention to Fantasia's 'Night on Bald Mountian'! The harpies are nakie! Yes, that's right, FULL FRONTAL NUDITY! And I think Fantasia is rated G! They also say 'He||' in the Hunchback of Notredame...alot.

To be fair, I strongly believe that the Disney Hunchback movie SHOULD of been rated PG. That movie was DARK. I can't believe it got away with a "G" rating 0_o .

Mr. Lobster? He said "animated", but I can understand the Black Cauldron thing. There's a whole lotta black magic going on there, and a character (a cute and lovable one, too) sacrifices himself, to the Cauldron.
But I agree with Lovely-chama, the Hunchback of Notre Dame was rather dark, and included a lot of historical facts, like burning gypsies at the stake.
Still, the original story, the one by Victor Hugo, was darker. Quasimodo was deaf, and ended up killing Frodo (I think that was his name), by pushing him off of the cathedral, and Esmeralda was killed, still, at the gallows.

The movies Atlantis: The Lost Empire and The Incredibles are both rated PG and those are both Disney films.....Dinosaurs was also rated PG, but that was a Pixar film, so I'm not sure if that counts as actually being a Disney movie.

Lilo and Stich was rated PG, too.
Kenni-Kun: I thought his name was 'Frolo'. Frodo is a hobbit. XD
