Too expensive for my tastes. I have beaten every FF game released in the U.S. but I would not cough up the money for that game. $100 AND you have to pay a monthly fee to stay registered at their site?! Cheap Sh--s!!!!!!!

FFXI is completely different from your normal Final Fantasy games Horo Horo. It's basically an mmorpg. If my memory serves me correctly you fight to keep control of the land against the monsters. I can't remember if it is just player vs. monsters or player vs player vs monsters. But I know the monsters can take land too.
I really wanted to play this game when I first saw it and heard about it. At the time it was a toss between FFXI or WoW (World of Warcraft). I thought World of Warcraft would be stupid so I wanted to play FFXI instead. But then my opinion ended up swapping and FFXI sounded rather boring to me if you just have to constantly fight to keep the land.
The bad part about the game when it first came out was that the Japanese had it about a month or 2 before the US. This wouldn't have been a problem if they had US servers, but you had to play on the Japanese servers...I'm not sure if they have changed this or not now though.
Another big issue is that your friends aren't guarenteed to be with you on the same server. When you enter the game you are put on a random server so if you want a friend on your server with you have to purchase a world pass. In order to get the world pass you have to go out and kill monsters for money which makes you level up to about 10 and then your friend finally comes in at level 1. It just doesn't work...
Oh...and the game only costs $100 if you are buying the Playstation version. But that includes the PS2 hard drive. The only way to get the PS2 hard drive is to buy it with FFXI. So you could either look at it as a good deal on a hard drive with a free game, or a really expensive game. The computer version of the game I believe is $50, unless it has dropped in price since it has been out. I don't remember how much it is a month though...I thought it was $9.99.
Edit: Sorry, I didn't mean to make my post sound "anti FFXI" but those were the reasons I decided not to get into the game. It would be nice to hear from someone who actually has played it though.

The object of the game isnt to fight for land but to discover the secret of Vana'dial by doing every quest almost like everquest but more fun because you can ride airships, chocubos, and boats also even when you do every quest you havent beet the game it goes on forever.and horohoro if you want to stay cheap get the pc version instead of ps2 im getting pc as well it only cost $30 and it comes with expansion pack the monthly fee is $13.00 but there is a 30 day free trial and there is no biference between the two versions because they both link up together since there both conected to the net.

Looking at the page it looks like the job stuff is similar to FF Tactics though...is that right?
I just noticed looking on the site though. It costs $13/month to play and you only get one character. If you want more characters they charge you $1/character a month and you can purchase up to 16 characters. I'm surprised by this. That gets even more expensive if you wanted to have more characters then.
Looking at Everquest 2, it looks like you get 4 characters per account but no more than 2 on one server. World of Warcraft hasn't made a final decision yet on how many characters they are going to allow per account, they were talking 8 at one point...

I understand that this game is totally different than previous FF titles, but I don't understand why playonline has to charge it's users a monthly fee to play the game. I also heard you have to pay to create extra characters in case you want to try a different race or gender. I did notice a PC version and that would be fine, but if I'm already paying you $50 for a game I should be able to play it without having to cough up more money. Battle.net allows free servers and they actually have U.S. ones that aren't random. The more I hear about this game, the more I begin to loathe Square-Enix. I'll still be pre-ordering FFXII though. I can't help it. I'm addicted!!!!

Mmorpgs usually charge monthly fees. Everquest does, World of Warcraft will, FFXI does. It's usually to help pay for the cost to keep the servers up to date and for GMs/moderators to maintain the game servers.
From World of Warcraft's FAQ: World of Warcraft will require a fee to play. This fee will be used to support the costs associated with the high-quality levels of service, support, and ongoing content creation that we are planning for World of Warcraft.
For some reason I couldn't find an explaination on FFXI's site as to why you need to pay a fee. And Everquest's site won't load for some reason. But I can assume it's for the same basic reasons. But I honestly think it is dumb that Square-Enix is making you pay extra fees to have extra characters.

On the site there is a way of viewing the game live just look to your right on the front page and you see Vana'diel live then once you go there you will see two pics at the bottom screen go to the one on the left down corner and you see Vana'diel live and the music on this game is sweet.

I've seen that...before the game came out over here, I would occasionally visit the japanese site and look at the live footage. It's really neat that they do that.

I'd just like to correct two things:
Saturn said the game was out for a month or two in Japan before it hit the US...actually the game was out for two years before it hit the US...Japan received the first expansion set just before the US received the game (with the first expansion included)...it's because of this and the fact that they didn't open any new servers for the US that it costs alot to buy a world pass and bring someone into your server to play with you. One of my friends was level 5 before he had enough to buy a world pass for his other friend (that starts that other friend at lvl 1)
And as for fighting for lands: There are three different city-states, and the world is broken up into regions...characters can come from any one of these city-states. The city-state that kills the most monsters in a region gets that region flagged as their territory at the end of the week...however, if the monsters kill more than 50% of the players that enter their region, the region goes neutral. This is information from before the game came to the US, so I don't know if it's still in use or not...
I tried pretty fiercely back in the day to get into the original beta tests, but my computer couldn't handle the game...
