Chapter 1- The Betrayal
“I’ve got you now Arin! There is no escape from me this time my friend!” Shin Lei has gotten that look on his face again. That look he always gets when he knows he has conquered his foe. His face gets this little smirk and he grins like he is about to put you out of your misery. I look around for any means of escape. Something, anything that could get me out of that mess. But alas, Shin Lei has me cornered and with no way out. “Fine Shin Lei! You win. Checkmate!!” I lay my king down in defeat. “That makes me the winner best two out of three Arin. You clean the sidewalk!!” “It’s not fair Shin Lei,” I protest, “You have always been the better chess player.” “Then you should stop challenging me.” He grins tossing me the broom, “You know I am better and you should just do your work and stop wasting both our times.” I smile, roll my eyes, and begin my chores.
Although I loathe losing to Shin Lei time and time again, sweeping does give me time to think. Think about my future. It’s been three years since I decided to become an assassin. It’s just too unfortunate that not many people are looking for anyone with those kind of talents. This is Beijing but I have not done anything outrageous in my life. If I could somehow get noticed by the Tao family or anyone in that line of work for the Emperor, I would be set for life. I know my skills still need fine tuning, but I just know I would be great.
Suddenly I turn around. I could have sworn that I was being watched just now. I laugh to myself. “Listen to me. Thinking I am being stalked. Why would anyone want to come after me?” Of course I didn’t realize that someone was not only watching, but has been for a long time.
After we close our store, Shin Lei locks up and says to me, “Tomorrow then?” “Yes. Yes. I will see you then.” We part ways and I only wish I had known that that was the last time I was going to see Shin Lei.
I reach my home to find a strange note pinned to the door by a shuriken:
“Arin,
You have been chosen by the Tao family to do a special job for the Emperor. We need your skills and expertise. If you agree then put this note on the table. If not, then stick the note back on the wall as you left it.
Fang”
Who was Fang? I had no idea what this was about and I nearly put the note back, when I realize what it meant. Someone, namely this Fang, is waiting in the shadows for my response. If I decline the offer I am a dead man. I decide to accept the offer and place the note on the table.
“Rats! I was hoping I could have some fun tonight!” Fang jumps down from my rooftop. He is, of course dressed entirely in black. He reveals his hood so I can see his face. He seems normal enough with his short hair tied behind his head in a small ponytail. He has a gash on his right cheek. Probably from the business he conducts. “Well,” he begins, “I am Fang. I do not quite understand why I have been chosen to watch you for these past 2 years, but I guess I will finally get my answer. Let’s go!” I stop suddenly. “Do I need anything?” “No. Now hurry up.” Fang says already losing his patience with me.
As we journey I dream about what awaits me if I please the Tao’s. I have heard rumors that they dabble in some sort of magic abilities. Maybe if I am able to please them, they could train me in their magical arts.
We reach the Emperor’s palace and I am greeted by the guards. They have a strange presence about them that makes me nervous. Finally, we reach our destination: The Tao family’s residence. “Let’s go. We haven’t got all night. I will be punished if we take too long.” Fang, as pleasant as when we departed pushes me through the doorway.
As I enter the room where my recruiter resides, I am amazed to see all the relics and ancient writings that greet me. The room is lit only by the fire in the fireplace. The man is wearing the symbols of the Tao family all over his robes. He looks so majestic as he sits by the fireplace in this darkened room. “Welcome Arin,” the old man begins, “As head of the guards and the Tao family I greet you.” “Why am I here…..” I begin. “SILENCE!!” Fang shouts as he smacks the back of my head. “That’s enough Fang. He deserves to know why we brought him here.” The old man tells me how Shin Lei has made quite an acquisition a few years ago. Shin Lei did tell me about a special “good luck” talisman that he won at an auction year’s back. That must be what they want. “We know you have some minor assassin skill, but we need you to help us get inside.” The old man continues, “You have worked for Shin Lei for many years and you also know your way around his security. He keeps his store locked up very tight and we have been unable to get inside. We do not wish to cause a ruckus since his store is in a very lively area. We don’t wish to reveal ourselves to the public. Can we count on your assistance in this matter?”
I, taking all of this in so suddenly, am stunned to reply. My friend Shin Lei, or my dreams. The old man, sensing my hesitation, coerces me further, “There is a possible opening for a Tao family assassin, if you decide to assist us.” That clinched it. Working for the Tao family? I would take that in a heartbeat. Fang looked less than pleased with the man’s offer, “You are going to offer this nobody a spot in the Tao family, while I have served you loyally for years?” “Calm down Fang,” the old man begins, “The family has its decision and we want Arin!” Fang’s eyes narrow as he glares at me.
As we journey back to Shin lei’s shop, I was told that I would just show us how to get in, and they would do the rest. I was not too enthusiastic, part was due to the fact that I am betraying my friend, and the other was the fact that I am just a lackey. I was actually hoping to showcase my skills to the group that accompanied me. Fang didn’t seem to care. He just resented me for my good fortune.
We get to the shop and I am about to reveal the secret entrance when I stop. I guess when it came down to it, I couldn’t betray my friend. Shin Lei and I have been together for too long. I just couldn’t do this to him.
“I’m sorry. I just can’t go through with this.” I cannot believe I just said that. Fang rolls his eyes and peers through the opening beside me. “I see what he’s hiding. Let’s go and get this over with.”
I block their path. “Noone is going to go in.” That was my last mistake. I suddenly feel the sharp prick of a knife going through my spine. Everything goes numb and I fall to the ground. The last thing my living ears hear is, “Now the spot in the Tao family belongs to me.” The next thing I notice is I am looking into the eyes of the old man of the Tao family.
“You have done well Arin.” He says. Fang cannot believe what he is hearing, “He is dead. He betrayed you and tried to stop our efforts. I had to kill him before he caused a commotion.” The old man replies, “Fang. You may never understand what it is the Tao family does. Arin here, has done us a valuable service. We still have use for his services. Even in death.” The man sends Fang away. I am wondering how he can see my spirit seeing as how I am dead. I look down and see my corpse. How could I let something like this happen? Just when I am about to cross over the old man speaks again. “You have earned your spot in the Tao family. Congratulations!” “How can you see me?” I ask.
“We are a race of doushi’s and shamans.” He explains, “We use spirits to help us do our work. Sometimes it is not enough to be an expert in stealth; you sometimes need the assistance of spirits.” As he explains he takes the talisman that was retrieved from Shin Lei’s store. Oh Shin Lei, I am so sorry. I have betrayed you and never got to apologize.
My spirit suddenly feels like it is being pulled into my body. “You will now serve the Tao family as a kyounshi. May I again congratulate you on your promotion Arin! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
The last thing I see is the old man laughing and then everything going dark. What has become of me?

I already have more of this written, but I figure this post is too long already. I wish to thank LC for the inspiration. I will post more of this story later. Let me know what you guys think. I know I’m kinda lacking on the details part. I tried to compensate.
