ive noticed something, american cartoons get away with things while anime doesnt...i mean take batman for example, there are guns, cigarettes, one episode of batman beyond has steroid patches...and sometimes there are suggestive themes...so why is it when all these kinds of things are in anime...it gets censored?? theres also the thing with nudity...its censored in anime...yet in almost all of the cartoon cartoons on cartoon network has naked behinds...dexter being the most reavelant >< (i think i spelled that wrong...) anyways....this just confuses me....is it because anime is more realistic? i dont think so...because i find batman to be realistic too...and now theres that show called 'the batman' (whats with adding 'the' to his name...i thought he was just batman...o_0) ahem..what im saying is that in every commercial for it theres heavy rock music playing...  ....what are your opinions on this? |

The ones with Nudity are less realistic and as for like Batman they have those shows on at certain times while anime seems to be surrounded by kids shows, I know it stinks, but live with it.

There's a difference in seeing someone's naked butt than seeing someone from the front fully nude.
Batman has been dumbed down over the years for the kiddies. Pick up the first few episodes on DVD if you get a chance, it was a heck of a lot darker when it was originally created for the adults.
The stuff that gets censored on tv is not dependant on whether it is anime or not. It all depends upon the FCC, that's who they have to get around and that is who pulls the strings on what can and cannot be shown on childrens television shows.

Let's put it this way.
Shaman king is on with a lot of Kiddie shows while Justice leage is on with a lot of action shows, they dump it down for the kiddies while Toonami is more for teens

It has to do with the time slot. If you are showing something on a Saturday morning when every child in america will be up and watching, then you surely can't go and show explicit blood, death, violence, sex, vulgar language, etc. If you are showing something at midnight, then the standards are going to be much different, children are not up at midnight, hence why cartoon network can get away with more stuff during the adult swim hour than the weekday after school block.

In most cases if you're airing to public television the only way to get guns, drugs, and cigarettes past censors is to show them in a negative light. FCC Broadcast Standards and Practices (aka the censors) don't want public animations to show Guns, Drugs, Breaking Glass (I dunno), Alcohol, Smoking, Nudity, Child Endangerment, Religion, or Strangulation. All of these are considered taboo. If the BS&P decides the dialogue or scene is too intense for the kiddies, they can ban the episode. I'm pulling most of this information from "Batman Animated" from the two page section dealing with censorship of the series. They've got an interesting article in here on how they had to creatively portray the Graysons death since they were forbidden to show it on-screen. Let me quote a few of these censors that came back to the studio (get you guys interested in buying this book): "Pages C97, C99, and C124-125: Baby-Doll can't bash Batman in the face with Mr. Happy Head."
"Page 19: BS&P says Bane picking up Robin by the head is too easy for a kid to copy with a pet or smaller kid."
"Page 34: It has [to] be clear through Harley's dialogue: "I think I made a mess on your cape" that she only barfed."
"Page 12: Network has a problem with Bruce's line: "I'll see you in hell!"" |

This is why I don't think all the blame for crappy dubs should come down solely on 4kids and other groups that license broadcasting rights for anime.
There is always someone watching you over your shoulder. I'm sure that they try to leave as much of the show as they can alone.

That is an interesting observation. That would answer some questions. But they wouldn't intentionally make anime lame just so we would watch other shows and hate Japan would they? |

Must....watch....more.....dubs.....Japanese...evil.... ;D Was I saying something???  Anyhow, I think bias has a lot to do with it, though I could be wrong. American cartoons do seem to show more than animes. It has to be more than just the time slot. Although that could be the bias. Perhaps all animes get thrown into kiddies blocks of cartoons, so groups like 4kids will have to maliciously butcher and dismember animes to make them viewable to the poor imperssionable kiddies. BLECH!! *vomits from disgust. |
