Besides, he's the antihero. His sex appeal counters Yoh's nonthreateningness.

That's a good question. I don't think Mr. Takei meant it to be fanservice because nudity on television isn't as much of a taboo in Japan as it is here. Then again he might done it on purpose because he knew Ren had lots of fangirls. The former statement is probably more logical, though.
