Which do you prefer watching more? Anime subtitled in English or dubbed in English and why? I prefer watching my anime subtitled in English but I don't abosuletly hate English dubbing. I'm not a hardcore purist I guess is what I'm saying, but I'll only watch the English version if I don't have access to the Japanese version. I think it's more fun to watch anime subtitled. It's something new and different and if I wanted to watch a program in English, I would just flip the TV to an English network, after all. I especially loath the heavily edited English adaptions like Cardcaptors and Sailor Moon. Those kinds of English dubs just abosuletely ruin the experience for anyone.
Even uncut English dubs are far from perfect. A lot of times they have really cheesy voice artists that just speak so blandly or their voice just doesn't really fit the character. It also annoys me when they keep mispronouncing every single Japanese word they're faced with. I guess because I watch the anime in Japanese first I'm used to the more proper way of pronouncing a character's name and I'm already used to a certain seiyuu that it makes me a little more picky about such things.
Don't get me wrong, though. I don't hate all English dubs. I will admit they're some good ones out there. Spirited Away has the best English dub I've ever seen by far. In Spirited Away's case, I actually like the English voice artists more than the Japanese seiyuu! But they're a few plot changes Disney made to the English dub of Spirited Away that make me like the Japanese version more, but that's a different topic for another time.
I also think it's not the same to watch an anime without the Japanese honorifics (you know what I'm talking about; those -san, -chan, -kun suffixes at the end of names) which are absent in the English dubbed version. I think the honorifics are important for the character development because they show the closeness of the characters. Like I said though, I don't hate all English dubs. It's just that given a choice between the two, I'd rather watch English subtitled anime over English dubbed anime.

I am unable to vote, as some people already know, I love BOTH sub's and dub's equally (in many cases it depends on the show.)
I'm that rare fan I suppose (though we subANDdub lovers seem to be growing a bit.)

I don't mind subbed shows, but I find myself reading the text so much that I miss a lot of the show.
If the dubbed versions were a little morte accurate then I don't think there would be a problem. I actually enjoy certain VAs I've heard on many of the dubs I watch.
A lot of the VAs they had for the Digimon series were well picked in my opinion......but I see I'm getting off subject so I'll just stop now.
I prefer dubs.

Well, it depends on the anime for me. I haven't seen the subbed versions of Shaman King, so as of now I like the dub just fine. The uncut DVDs will be mine! I watch both the sub and dub of Inuyasha and I LOVE them both. Digimon, I've only seen the dub of the show, and a sub of a few of the movies. I really love the dub VAs on Digimon! As for everything else, it's a matter of how long I'm willing to wait to download an episode on my slooow dialup connection. What I'm really sick of is the whiny purists. I myself hate it when a whole bunch of stuff is edited out or put in the wrong order, but purists take it to far. They are always b*tching about how the dubs suck. Whine, whine, whine. Really now, if you hate the dub so much then don't watch it. The thing is, not everyone knows Japanese. If FoxBox aired the sub versions the ratings would probably tank. The kids with attention spans of 2 minutes would turn it off in a flash. They probably wouldn't want to watch something they couldn't understand. Sure they could read the subtitles, but they wouldn't want to be distracted from the pretty pictures. Let them show a dub. If ratings are good, then we get dub/sub DVDs. Some dubs are horrible, yes. But most dubs I've seen are not that bad. I will say that the editing gets out of hand. Some things should be edited for the dub, but some of the stuff they do is just unnesessary. The whole hamburger thing. Yoh eats rice! When Americans think of lazy, they think of cheeseburgers. I mean, I can see what they were going for, but it was better the way it was. Umm, anyway, my point is that I like both, (most of the time). And I apologize if I've offended anyone on the board.  |

I can't vote, for I like both subbed and dubbed. It ultimately depends on what I'm watching. I could probably go through a list of anime and tell you whether I prefer each one subbed or dubbed...but I won't.
What I hate about some anime that is subtitled is that sometimes there is just too much on the screen. Man...what anime was I watching that did this...*think*...back in college...I don't remember. But there was just so much going on with the subtitled text that you would keep missing something.

That's exactly my point Saturn. You want to be able to watch the show, not the text. That's why more often than not, I prefer dubs.

Yet deaf people can watch their tvshows with closed-captions on all the time....if they can do it, then anyone else can....It's strange that I've never had any major problems watching subtitled anime since the first time I've started watching it. It's always just been really natural for me, but that's just me. The one thing I don't like about subbed anime is when sometimes the timing is a little off or the sentences are translated in a way where it doesn't fit the lip-movement, but this rarely happens, so it's not too huge of a deal for me.

Yes, bad subtitle timing is THE MOST ANNOYING THING ON EARTH.
... well, second to people who talk on cell phones when I'm trying to take their order and there is a line behind them *twitch* . Well, o.k there are lots of things that are similarly annoying, but , you get my point XD !
Yeah, and I've never had trouble reading subtitles and seeing a show either ^_^ .
What's really sad for the sub/dub fan is when your favorite cast of a show contains various random actors from BOTH the sub and dub. Then, it just becomes so hard to chose which version to watch ;_; !

Mostly I'd much rather watch an anime in subs.
However, with one anime I make an exception, where I like the dub better.

Even though Padudu's dub voice actress couldn't pronounce Japanese words to save her life, I simply adore the voices of Mustard and Pipin in the dubbed version.

However, I can ALMOST stand watching the dub of Azumanga Daioh. Ayumu's dub voice really gets to me though. I think a New Yorkish accent would've substituted for her Osakan accent better than a Texan one, but that's just my opinion.

Since my cousin is Deaf and I'm semi-fluent in ASL, I watch everything CCed anyway... and if I have to watch a dub, I mute it and pretend it's subtitled and I lost the audio... Anyway, subs vs. dubs was actually the topic of the lesson I taught my middle schoolers in Anime Club yesterday, and here was what I said: Other than editing (including cuts, re-arrangements of episodes/clips, etc.), there are three major complaints anime fans have about dubs: 1) Major changes to dialogue (to show an example, I played the last chapter of the first CCS movie. They actually thought Sakura LOST from teh dialogue. Then I played them the Japanese version). 2) Changes to voices which make the characters seem to have different personalities (my example was Remington from Chrno Crusade... they were scared of him in English, and thought he was some stuck-up rich guy). 3) Changes to the music (I showed them the English 1st Pokemon movie's scene where "Brother my Brother" plays, as opposed to the original's dark battle music) I also played them my 73MB, 5 minute "Why Dubs Suck" mockumentary... which, of course, is completely dubbed (and my audio got out of sync in the render, so of course it's got horrible mouth movement-matching) |

I personally have no problems reading dialogue subtitles and watching the show at the same time. The problem comes when there is other stuff in the background that ends up having to be translated as well. Like various signs and notes in Japanese. I hate it when there is so many subtitles on the screen that you have to actually pause to read it all because it goes by so quickly. I'm a slow reader so I have more problems with it than some people probably do. A main problem that usually occurs for me is when they go and translate background music that is playing while characters are holding a conversation. I want to know what the music is saying, but I also don't want to get lost in the conversation. So I either will have to ulitmately watch it twice or just give up on the music.

Then there are shows like Revolutionary Girl Utena where it turns out the songs don't actually make sense no matter how you translate and or watch them ^o^ . It took me forever to finally come to that understanding/conclusion.
