Anime/Manga: Pros and Cons

The thread title is pretty much self explanatory. Now, I know we all love anime and manga, (pros) but I'm sure there must be something in them that annoys you (cons). It can be in general, or you can mention specifically, like maybe only things in shoujo anime/manga annoy you.

A note, no mentioning that you hate it when they get dubbed. XD It's pretty obvious...and well...it sort of doesn't count. ^^; Now, let's begin shall we? XD

Pros

The artwork. Period. (How obvious XD) Anime and Manga's artwork just stands out. The animation in anime seems to be much better than cartoons as well.

Storylines/characters/elements (and all that other junk) are a pro too, they're just better developed than cartoons. (Man, I'm going to be comparing this with cartoons aren't I? XD) They're like...soap operas....only animated...and not so dramatic. XD

Cons

This mostly has to do with shoujo anime. >< While I enjoy shoujo anime as much as the next person, I just usually find them WAY to fluffy and bubbly and..and...they're like Olsen Twins movies! ><! Despite everything going wrong at first, it all clears up and the girl is happy at the end with her soulmate (which usually just so happens to be an overrated bishounen >< ).

Now, shounen anime....I think that it usually all turns out the same...o_0 The main character is always one of those brash, bold, troublemaking, "I can do anything!" guys. >< (and they usually have hats...o_0)...then the female co-star is always the damsel in distress...and is always all emotional about everything th guy tells her...><

Then there's the villan...let me just say....DBZ.....>< *shoots herself*

This is why I like Mankin so much, it's different than other shounen anime...it just has more unique feeling and um..."non-shounen-ish" characters...o_0 (Yoh the slacker, Anna the strong, switch their personalities around and you'll have a more shounen-ish feeling in my opinion...)

For manga...It takes forever to draw...>< Believe me, it does...I tried making one page of something making it as detailed as I could...but it still came out kind of sloppy...AND it took me...a lot of hours...(I wasn't timing..XD)

Yeah...I'm done...I might have more later...XD (oh joy) I might have sounded a little discrimatory....(I think...o_0....spelling?)...so anyone who wants to disagree or bash me, go ahead! ;D This is simply my opinion on shoujo and shounen anime...^^;;;

Of course...I still love anime as much as mashed potatoes.....yes...and that's A LOT of love, believe me...mmmm....

Well, pros....I can't say much about anime since I've only watched a few and was only surrounded by mangas but I guess one thing is that it's sometimes exotic. There are those with a great storyline and conflicts and the like. It's as if you were reading a great book except its in art. ^^;

Another thing is that it's more funny. (I'm saying a lot of the books I've read, not just from Japan *cough Ragnarok cough* ) In cartoons, there aren't your normal sweatdrops, embarrased looks, the chibiness, and the plain stupidity and insanity that plagues them. =3

Exactly what resurie said. I am not a fan of shoujo anime. x_o You may all hit me. *runs* But the thing that happens is that sometimes, when romance happens, they happen too fast. It's not right, a relationship doesn't develop within one day. x_o Say for instance, the first time you see the anime, the boy and girl are hated enemies. Next thing you know, they're kissing. Maybe those sort of things happen in real life, but the way I see it, shoujo animes usually have 'unrealistical happy endings'. As resurie said it, everything goes wrong but the girl finds her bishie and yadda yadda ya fall in love etc etc etc..

Cons: I hate those love/hate relationships that's in a lot of shoujo anime. Miaka x Tamahome is probably one of the worst anime couples ever. It always annoys me so much how they're fighting one minute and then making out the next.

YAY! I would've said that but sadly, last time I did, these people came maurading me, going nuts because I said that...=.=;;

But the one thing that annoys me a lot are those types which the girl is blessed/cursed with the role of justice freak and the boy is the emotionless type who doesn't open his heart...Oh the clichednes... Or as afformentioned(sp?), the female in distress.



^^; I'm basically saying everything resurie did. I like Shaman King because of those aspects that Yoh is calm and Anna kicks ass. ^__^ And Matamune. X3

Pros: The animation/artwork of anime/manga are almost always gorgeous. I also love how unlike most American animated series, most Japanese animated series will have full-scale orchestras performing the musical score, and it just sounds so beautiful. I also like how the theme songs in Japanese animation are usually sung by proffessional singers with non-cheesy lyrics. And I like how the storylines can be very complex, the characters can be very memorable, and I like the wide variety of genres that're offered.

I also like how in Japanese animation there are shows/movies for everyone. Most American animation is aimed at children, and if it's aimed at older audiences, it's almost always some sort of sitcom (like The Simpsons or King of the Hill), but with Japanese animation, they have plenty of serious series/movies for both children and adults, which proves that animation is for everyone, and is not just for kids or is pornography. Japanese animation also has some of the best comical moments in them. From what little I've seen of Azumanga Daioh, I have to say it's way funnier than any American comedy I've ever watched.

Cons: I hate those love/hate relationships that's in a lot of shoujo anime. Miaka x Tamahome is probably one of the worst anime couples ever. If I want to watch something that's episodic, I might as well watch American animation. I also don't like it when the anime series stray too far off from the plot of the original manga.

I don't mind a few plot changes here and there (as long as they're good changes), but I don't like it when they have so many, although there are a few expections to this. And finally, I hate how Japanese animation is so expensive and the DVDs offer very little. If you're going to sell DVDs at a ridicilous price, I think you should at least put more worth-while extras on the discs, or release more episodes per volume or what would be more preferable would be to release them at cheaper, more affordable prices. I wonder which is more expensive.....anime or marijuana?

pros: soundtracks are MUCH better!! most of them have some sort of message or some sort of motif that stays throughout the series. Characterization is WAY superior. Girls hotter ^_~. And (this is coming from an American) the Japanese culture that is infused in most of them gives them an exotic tone, like a whole new world to experience. Having a new world, and then having all the manga/anime out there connected in this world, is a great experience.

cons: filler episodes, recap episodes, sometimes the concepts get a little too farfetched (i.e. people flying into the sky and dissappearing into a star)

im gonna have to agree with the rushed romances. many times, characters who hate each other suddenly like each other for no reason. or...a character likes another before the start of the series, and no explanation is given why

I haven't read a lot of manga so I can't judge it. I'll just talk about anime then:

Pros

Artwork ;D, just like most of you. I also like the music and the storylines.

Cons

I hate recaps (unless they're about things that haven't been shown already in that anime or funny ones). I also hate animes that take about 5 episodes about something (like Pokemon and DBZ). But I do like Pokemon, since during the episodes they meet new Pokemon. And I think this is the final one, I hate relatsionships(sp?) that are overdramtic, like people fighting and then making up. I kept using the word 'hate' for some reason...

Pros: Artwork, music (I've got tons of anime soundtrack music), voices, stories.

Cons: Really good animation scenes of a cool scene, then in the next eppy, when they do that scene again, the animation is badly done. Or, whenever a really good animated episode is followed by a terribly animated eppy. E.g. DBZ, when Mirai no Trunks slices Furiza up. In the eppy when he does it on a cliffy, the animation is superb, but on the next eppy, the very same scene was done with terrible animation.

Another con? When eppies are made out to be really good, then when you miss it, and wait to see it again, it's not as good as it seems.
