yet another "worst..." thread. this is for the most crappily subtitled anime (fansubs count), such as dubtitling, etc. for me, that would be...

Ranma 1/2: the subbing itself is OK, but all the songs are translated to rhyme, often rendering the subs inaccurate.

Shaman King: the subtitles seem pretty accurate, but every time Manta sneezes the text tells us all about it.

Yu-Gi-Oh: they don't accurately translate the names of the cards.

The licensors did that on purpose - they WANT the cards known as their English names no matter what.

Just because it's on purpose doesn't mean it has to be liked ^_~ .

Anyhoo, my vote goes to the first printing of the Tokyo Babylon anime. The timing is way, WAY off. I mean... WOW (the dub is pretty bad too, so you were rather FORCED to watch the badly subtitled Japanese track).
This has been fixed in recent disks however. Really. It's all good now ^_^ .

I have some Yu-Gi-Oh! japanese DVDs and the translations are VERY VERY mediocre.

A friend of mine lent me some of her Naruto DVDs and they're are very badly translated too.

I have a subbed copy of Cardcaptor Sakura: The Sealed Card I downloaded a year before the official English subtitled version was released, but I'm not sure if it's a bootleg release or a fansub. It doesn't give credit to any fansubbing group like most fansubs do, and the quality is pretty awful. The video quality was very fuzzy and it was presented in that crappy standard screen (I prefer watching my movies in widescreen). The subtitles were also pretty bad. The translation didn't make any sense at all, either.

It felt as if they used Bablefish to translate the dialog and didn't go back to re-edit the sentences any, so that they would make sense. I had to literally use my imagination to try and understand what the heck was going on. It also really annoyed me that they kept getting the Clow Cards' names wrong. Like, they called the Windy card the "Storm card" and the Wood card the "Tree card." >< Luckly, I now own the official subbed version on DVD, so I don't have to watch this copy anymore, but it sure was pretty bad.

I don't have many subs...but from what I have seen, I'm saying Funimation's SK.

Now, before any one goes and says "It's 4kids' first time!" True, but is it Funimation's? o_0

First off, the subtitles are those for the hearing impaired (that's what nippon was talking about). I find this very annoying. @_@ And you can't change them. The Yu-Gi-Oh! subtitles weren't like that, why are the SK ones?

Now, the fact they're for the hearing impaired doesn't bother me much, it's the fact when you combine them with the dubtitles.

As you know, the SK sub have dubtitles, sure they're accurate, but there were some small things that annoyed me...yes, I'm very picky...T_T Now, if you combine them with hearing impaired "sub"titles, it gets annoying.

How so? Well, let's say Morty moans in the dub, yet in the original, he doesn't, he stays silent. Since they're dubtitles, they go along with the dub's timing. So when you're watching the Japanese version with subtitles, you see the sound effect [moans], yet Manta doesn't moan, he's silent. o_0 I found this very annoying.

I can give another example, in Anna's intro episode, when she says she wants Yoh to give her an easy life, and Yoh, Manta, and Amidamaru are shocked, the subtitles say "ALL: Aaaah!". BUT! You clearly can hear them saying something in Japanese. I can't hear it very well, so I don't know what it is...XD

There are more like the one above. Gah....@_@

Also, the sub doesn't translate most things, like signs and stuff. And the days of the week weren't translated. AND, I noticed one or two grammatical errors o_0, one of them being when you see the sign "Asakura" in front of Yoh's house. The subtitles say "Asakaura". o_0

This doesn't really have to do with the sub...I think...but on the box, episode 3 is called "Tao Len", yet in the episode itself, it's called "Another Shaman". o_0 Yeah...ok...

I may sound like I'm picking at the small things, but personally, they bother me...I really do hope the SK subs get better with time...

also, a lot of times when Amidamaru says "Yoh-dono" (which I've heard translated as "Lord Yoh"), the subs say stuff like "exactly" and "that's right". my brother and I crack up every time it happens, cuz it's just so sad.
