A favorite series of mine that I can't help but feel doesn't get enough recognition X3. Miwa Shirow (homepage) is one of my favorite artists, and you could consider this his 'breakthrough' into the manga community. It's currently being serialized in Ultra Jump. It does have graphic content at times, so I would advise you to check it out at your own risk (brief nudity, language, and graphic violence).
Snipped from MANGA TRANSLATION: "Dogs is the story of four people living by the blade in the dark world of a mysterious city.
Published in 2001, it is a single volume that ties together the stories of four people in a narrative. In July 2005, "Dogs: Bullets & Carnage" started serialization in Ultra Jump."
It's basically summed up by that first sentence: four 'outsiders'--I suppose you could call them that-- trying to maintain their lives in a sinister city. Crime rates are obviously high. Whether they happen to come across criminal acts in the making or equally scandalous scenes, it would seem that it is the norm.
Bullets and Carnage isn't a standalone--it has the predecessor volume, simply titled 'DOGS', where the main characters are introduced. Among other bit-players, the four main characters include:
Haine
Has a very mysterious past and an equally mysterious (and disturbing) neck injury, among others. He's claimed that he's searching for a 'entrance down below', which is an unexplained goal of his. His career is unknown, but probably similar to that of Mihai's. He keeps company with his partner, Badou, and the 'blind' priest that lets him stay at his church from time to time. Has a problem with women.
Badou
An obsessive smoker. Works in an intelligence agency, where he seems to have the job of collecting/clearing up 'scandalous' information on others (usually significant figures, like yakuza bosses). Haine is his partner, and he knows Mihai, who saved him when he screwed up a mission. Which is definitely normal.
Mihai
An assassin, he also has a very dark past, one which I won't go into detail about here. Currently spends his time at a shop run by Kiri, an acquaintance of his. Badou also hangs there when he's not around Haine.
Naoto
A young girl set out to avenge the man whom she believes both murdered her parents and gave her a long scar on her chest. The event left her emotionally torn, so she cannot remember her real name, nor the faces of her parents. 'Naoto' is the title given to her by her sensei (he knew a Naoto once before--the other Naoto is an assassin 'down below'). An ace with a sword. Has not yet came in contact with any of the other main protagonists.
It's unlicensed as of now, and I honestly doubt it will be picked up any time soon (kind of obscure). I can dream X3. DOGS is worth a read, that's for sure. Torrents/http downloads are only available at MANGA TRANSLATION. Direct-downloads for newer chapters can be found in the forums, and you can view the first volume online here.
