The main portion of InuYasha takes place in Feudal Japan, but Kagome is from modern-day Japan (it's never said if it's Tokyo or not). .hack takes place in Japan. Oh, and more shows that are among the greatest that don't take place in Japan: Fullmetal Alchemist (1910s, I'd say a European-type country) and Chrno Crusade (late 1920s, New York). According to the manga, Kagome IS from Tokyo. Also, Case Closed: Detective Conan takes place in Tokyo (and TMS should know that we ain't buyin' it that the main character's name was originally Jimmy Kudo (He's Shin'ichi Kudo in the original Japanese) XD)

yes his name is Jimmy Kudo but he uses Conan as a fake name to hide his idenity from the men who turned him into a child and are trying to kill him.

The point that ViciousKG is trying to make is that "Jimmy's" name in the Japanese version of the show is Shin'ichi Kudou. The show has a VERY Japanese feeling to it so the name changes are kind of silly. But that's off topic.
There's lots of good anime that takes place outside of Japan or Tokyo. Take Fullmetal Alchemist or the majority of Shaman King for example. Tokyo is just one of the more famous areas of Japan (not to mention its big). Think of it as how in U.S t.v and cinima we use New York as the setting a lot.

Some animes like shaman king don't want you to know where the setting is. Others aren't afraid. I think it has to do with the licensing co.
4kids doesn't seem to like Japan, while other shows like Digimon use the map of the earth a lot so trying to avoid Japan was futile and they just let it go. I'm glad they did. I appreciate not being lied to. ;D

im getting the feeling no one listens to me...T_T in shaman king, they DO live in tokyo, but they live in the 'province' of Funbarioka....(or Funbarigaoka...i forgot which ones correct) in the anime, in ep 2, yoh comments that he "came to Tokyo" in order to find a spirit, and in ep 10, i believe, the bowling alley ryu and others were in said "Funbari" on it. and its pointed out in the manga that yoh is from Izumo, and Anna is from Aomori, as a fun note, Takei-san is from Aomori whoa hold up, that is unless your talking about the dub...

No, no, people are missing my point ^^; . I know that Manta and the rest have their, "home base" as it were, in Tokyo. However, if you think about it, more than half of the episodes takes place in the U.S . And we can't forget the China episodes ^_^ !

Koh- actually, it's made quite clear that An and the others live in Japan, and very near to each other, as well (since they meet offline often, and places are named, like Shimokitozawa). The only character in the saga that is confirmed as NOT living in Japan is Hotaru, who lives in America.
Also, in the timeframe that the Animatrix takes place, Japan does not exist, so you can't really count it.

pretty much, ive never seen a good anime that takes place in any other city than tokyo. I'm pretty sure Excel Saga takes place in a city south of Tokyo...Fukuoka or something like that.... Isn't a lake. Is a canal. That is why there is a bridge. FMA and Ghost in the Shell and Scryed in the same world? Well, if Envy actually does what I've heard he/it does in the film...that might actually be possible...I am now scared. Really scared Tokyo is definitely the setting of most manga...it's a pity there's nothing set in Sapporo that I know of. Ah well. Innle is babbling now so Innle will shut up. -Innle

FMA and Ghost in the Shell and Scryed in the same world? Well, if Envy actually does what I've heard he/it does in the film...that might actually be possible...I am now scared. Really scared Not sure exactly what you're refering to that Envy does (don't think I WANNA know), but I'll explain my "all these shows take place in the same world" thingy. Okay, so as these go, FMA takes place first. And there are two pieces of this that tie it together with everything else: Alchemy and Roy. Chrno Crusade is next, as it's only about 10-15 years after FMA. Note the use of alchemy. I think someone from FMA went and taught the Elder that stuff... he obviously doesn't have an attention span long enough to learn it on his own (too many distractions). Xenosaga comes in briefly here, with the beginning of Episode 1 (the Zohar being discovered in Kenya), and it leads directly to S-cry-ed. Now we know what set off that effect thingy that created the Alters (I haven't watched it in long enough to remember what the effect was called). Also, pay attention to the HOLY women's uniform... obviously an after-effect of Roy eventually becoming Fuher and changing the woman's uniform. Years later, Roy's decendant, Motoko Kusanagi, shows off the Mustang tradition (started by Roy, of course) of women not wearing much... I mean, LOOK at what she wears (or doesnt' wear, more like it). Lost Universe comes in here also, as it looks like Roy's sense of fashion in women's uniforms has spread to the Universal Guardians... And that takes us back to Xenosaga. Roy's uniforms have left the military and gone to Vector's women. Then again, Vector is more science orientated, and HOLY did do experiments with science, so I guess it's not that big of a jump.

even EVA, a nonmodern day anime take place in a city called "new-tokyo #3"...or something like that. but it's only to be expected, since they are japanese anime. I just wonders if there are any other large cities in japan other then Tokyo?
