Is it me but is it always the same town that the anime characters live in? I watched both Beyblade and Digimon and both seemed to have that lake seen in episode 5 of Shaman King (where they meet Anna).

Well, Tokyo is a pretty popular city. After all, it's the capital in Japan and it seems to be a large city, so I guess they like to show their patrionism by basing the location of popular anime series in the capital city of Japan. ^^

And then there's the Tokyo Tower... got destroyed in Digimon Adventures 01, is under repairs in Tenchi Muyo! In Love, and then the girls are abducted from it in Magic Knights Rayearth. I'm sure it's in plenty of other movies, too.
Then again, it is also my belief that FMA, Chrno Crusade, Xenosaga, S-cry-ed, Ghost in the Shell, and Lost Universe take place in the same world (I can give you the continuity, too... There were others, but I don't remember them off the top of my head).

those types of lakes are sorta common in Japan...usually theres always a bridge on top...and in shaman king, they do live in Tokyo...but the exact location where they live is Funbarioka...i think its a province...or something..

pretty much, ive never seen a good anime that takes place in any other city than tokyo. Actually, A Little Snow Fairy: Sugar, which takes place in a modern-day setting, has its location in a European town. I think it's in Germany, but don't quote me on that. And I personally thought Sugar was a very good anime, but that's just me.

I thought inuysha took place some where else or atleast another time because Kagome dresses in regular clothes but everyone else dresses in robes.

The main portion of InuYasha takes place in Feudal Japan, but Kagome is from modern-day Japan (it's never said if it's Tokyo or not).
.hack takes place in Japan.
Oh, and more shows that are among the greatest that don't take place in Japan: Fullmetal Alchemist (1910s, I'd say a European-type country) and Chrno Crusade (late 1920s, New York).
