How should the Hikaru no Go anime be dubbed if an American company like 4Kids or FUNimation got their hands on it?
1. Definately release an uncut w/ subtitles and uncut dialog on DVD. 2. If on TV, remove cigarettes but PLEASE keep the Japanese names...
Since there is less to edit in Hikaru no Go, in that aspect it would be easier for the show to find its way on American TV stations. However, I'm not sure if there is enough demand for such programs...

HnG wouldn't be shown on US tv. There is virtually no action, and Sai is the only 'supernatural' aspect to it. It just doesn't appeal to your average animation viewer in the US.

Go isn't the most existing of things, but then again, neither is golf, yet lots of people watch that. Who knows...

This isn't the kind of anime 4kids is looking for. It has no collectible monstars or card games. I think a good company will get it and it will be released straight to DVD.

Hotta and Obata show the Go moves as if the players were jousting together. Of course, this may not be the case with the anime.

I truely love the anime, and I remember being surprised about how much I ended up loving it. However, I have to agree with the consesus and say I just don't think this show is marketable in the U.S.
As I mentioned in another post, the show takes a bit to get into (of course, once it has you in it's hold, it doesn't let go!) And even then, there's a lot to pay attention to.
"action" as Americans see it involves people hitting each other, not a board game. If they tried to put this show on t.v I believe they would be at a loss at who to market it towards. Since t.v time= advertising, well, it seems to me that to most companies this show would be too big of a risk.

I really hope 4Kids gets the rights to this one. Shocking, I know, but there's not much to edit, so it would pretty much be shown unedited in English. Wishful thinking? Possibly.

You would have to be insane to think that. They would change all sorts of stuff, just to kill us. They would make Sai a girl, and it would be called Chinese Checkers, obviously. They are reading this right now and will liscence it if They think you will watch/buy it and so be implanted. Watch your words, my friend.

The first time I saw Sai, I even thought he was a girl! 4Kids isn't what they used to be. They don't edit out every little piece of text like they used to, and they are editing out less and less with each episode of YGO and Pocket Monsters I watch.

Dude, 4Kids is still making bad edits to OP Besides, 4Kids prolly won't license H n G. I wonder if VIZ already has the license to the anime and isn't telling us. ... I agree and disagree with you JD. True the last two new episodes of the yugioh dub floored me with what they left in the show and SK has even begun to show blood, but 4kids still makes plenty of useless edits of text and they are still guilty of totally rewriting scenes that were fine to begin with. *Anna/Faust deal.

Hikaru no Go is undubbable (how I love that word!) simply because it's boring. No one wants an anime focused on a board game. They want A-C-T-I-O-N. But that's sad, since I think it's the anime that'll get edited the most (Hikaru no Go has to be the cleanest manga I've ever read).

I highly love Hikaru no Go (but I haven't seen the anime). Yet another anime that needs more shota...

I realized last week that there's no way that 4crap would want HnG. The reason: the marketability.
While yes, they could market HnG toys, Go boards, etc., but Go is an ancient game. They can't control the distribution of Go boards. I mean, anyone can design a Go board and sell it. With all of their other licenses, they can get the rights to merchandising, and/or keep others from getting the merchandising rights. They can't do this with the game Go, and therefore they can't control the market. If they can't control the market, then other people can make money off of their license. They're not gonna risk that.
