A big reason why cuts happen in anime in general is because the FCC regulates programming depending on certain times of the day.
Shaman King, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and other shows shown on Saturday mornings get cuts not just because of 4Kids overzealousness in trying to make the show appeal to American children, but also because the FCC has certain guidelines on what may or may not be shown at certain times of the day. (This is why the older DBZ episodes are so heavily edited)
So, what shall we do? Shall we push for looser FCC guidelines? Should we push to have shows on cable only?

Another reason is because advertisers tend to push for additional changes and editing as well.
(somewhat off topic?) My opinion of Shaman King on t.v: The first half of Shaman King could of gone by with miniimal editing and story changes. The second half of the show is actually pretty inapropriate for such a young audience (religion, bleeding tears, implied violence, etc...)

So, what shall we do? Shall we push for looser FCC guidelines? Should we push to have shows on cable only? NOT CABLE!!! Then I will never get to see anime. It's a double edged sword with the FCC. If we loosen regulations on cartoons, then what about movies? People will push to put nudity and all kinds of other garbage on public tv. I would like to be able to allow my son to watch tv. I'm all in favor of less editing in Shaman King. Some of the things they edit are ludicrous at best, but I am glad they don't show the gore............I think. I'm torn on the issue.

Well... Shaman King isn't really gorey. (seriously, I don't like gore either.) It just gets serious. (without loosing it's comedic moments however.)

Here's a related FCC note that I found interesting...
Apparently, Dale Earnhart, Jr, the then leader in the Nextel Cup points standings, used the word "s---" in an interview after a win at Talladega Super-speedway (the quote in TV Guide is "It don't mean s--- right now. Daddy's won here 10 times."). NASCAR apparently docked him 25 points (which took him out of the top spot) for saying it, even though you hear it all the time on other shows. TV Guide mentions an FCC fine, but doesn't say if that SHOULD'VE happened instead, or if it already did in addition.
Seems to me that things are getting MORE strict...

o_0...wasnt it her head and arms that were bleeding..? I wanna say "probably" but who knows? All I know is that sometimes the iron maiden itself has blood come out of the place it's "eyes" are when Jeanne is in there. ...And she's feeling dramatic I guess ^^; .
