So...I'd like to learn how to draw.
Specifically comic or manga format.
Now I realize I could just start drawing with no direction, which is practice...but I was hoping someone like Lovely or the other artists on this forum could give me some direction, or pointers, or concepts, or something to help me along the way.
Maybe since SK is in repeats we could do like, weekly classes on this forum or something...like, how to do eyes one week...or something...
....
....help...

Well if you want to draw manga stuff......
Start drawing some pictures you see in manga. Draw simple ones. Get the form down and make sure everything's right size. Keep drawing and comparing your drawings with the ones in the manga and see what you need to improve.
Hope that helps.

Ah yes. Even though I haven't scanned anything...because I can't...but maybe I can help.
I can tell you my style is different from Lovely's. Actually, everyone has their own unique style for drawing. I think maybe you should find out what kind of style you want first. Then practice with it.
It takes a while though...I first started drawing in 6th grade (I'm in 10th now) and believe me, I SUCKED. XD Probably because I taught myself to draw. Only using the anime on TV as a guideline...@_@
Right now, I can only draw specific things, for example, I can't draw shoujo. I SUCK at shoujo. My characters are nice...but not cute. I sort of draw like Takei...spiky hair, bored/pissed/"I'm going to kill you" eyes. o_0 Yeah...I just think it looks cool...
Basically, I'm saying you should find what kind of style you want. Lovely has a very unique style for example. My drawings look normal...XD But don't think things will happen fast, I've been drawing for...um...*counts* 4 years...o_0 It's not a lot really...but I still kinda suck...especially at backrounds...those are evil.
I really wish I could show you some of my drawings...but I have no scanner, or digital camera for that matter...T_T
The reason you have to find a style...is because it would be easier to help, since people here have different styles, it would confusing...o_0 Well...to me it would...

I know very little about drawing XD.
hummm... My grade school art teacher really didn't know what she was doing XD.
so...
I learned how to draw mostly by tracing XD and most of my stuff still sucks. but tracing did help me until I could draw with out tracing mostly cat, and dogs.
As for anime, it's mostly hit or miss for sometimes I can draw really well and sometimes I plainly suck. (Mostly I suck) XD
But as long as I’ve been drawing anime (*cough*notlong*cough*) I still don’t really have a style of my own.

I can't exactly teach you as I'm not much of a tutor but I can give you a bit of motovational advice, even though you probably won't use it *If it turns out differently from everyone elses don't worry, It's just your style *If it doesn't turn out how you like keep trying, I started drawing anime when I was about 7 or 8 and now I'm 13 and I still think I suck ^^; *If you feel like you're not getting any better then just look at some of your old drawings, you'd be surprised how much you've improved, you can use this to keep striving for what you want to achive *Everyone needs to start somewhere, you aren't going to produce a masterpeice on your first go but it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep trying
But you probably knew most of that already so I'll just shut-up.

Okay, cool, thanks everybody! I read up to what s91 wrote before I rushed out and bought a pad of sketch paper and pencils with Saturn. As for style suggestions...I want to use my own style once I find one...copying is cool and all, but ultimately, my own style would be best in the end. But for now, I took your advice and started copying to see where my skills (abandoned at the tender age of 11) lay buried... I was pretty pleased with the results (since I assumed they were all going to be amorphous blobs before I started) so I'll post them! We started with sketching Aimee's computer to build us up before moving onto the main event: Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. I completely botched the right arm length, you'll see where I've drawn a slash through it...and because of it, I had to improvise the left side of her face and body which should've been covered by her wand...I guttered the other arm and hand too... Does anyone have ideas on drawing hands? Her mouth is supposed to be a shout, not a happy, I couldn't curve it right when I was drawing... And that's when the sweatdrop came into play on the computer... I was pretty pleased that she wasn't a blob, but pretty dismissed that she's not a good copy, so I flipped the box over and drew the head shot of Pixy Misa...she came out totally awesome, so I did a quick sketch of my avatar, Robo-Z...messed up his perspective while I was drawing his eyes, and then started to try and figure out perspective changing while I was drawing him...botched his ear which I circled...I didn't bother to correct some of his lines either... Now I've seen these uhh, stick figures with circle shapes, thingies with a cross drawn through the head, which I'm assuming is a guide for positioning...they look like armitures for a model? I'm guessing they're used to correct perspective...what are they called?? And thanks for the inspirational Magenta-chan! LC

Nice, I like your second one. ^^
Hands...are evil...*ahem* I don't know how to help in drawing hands...I actually kind of suck with them...but my best advice would be to observe a real hand (like your own, or someone elses) and try to draw it...well...that's what I do...
I can help make lines straighter! I know you didn't ask, but it helps. XD Instead of holding you hand to do one line, (sort of like when you trace) do 'slashes'. Let me explain, drawing a line without stopping makes lines wobbly. By doing 'slashes', you're lines will come out more straight, but drawings tend to look more like sketches when you do this.
How to 'slash', just move you're hand in the direction you want...make on line with one swish of your hand, and continue to follow the line with swishes. It helps, well, it helps me a lot...
I hope you understood what I just said...^^;; and I hope it helps...

Since you want your own style, what I would do is look at or draw different styles. Take some you like and form them into your own.

Hands are hard to draw. Probably because most people forget to draw the palm. My hands used to be blobs with random fingers sprouting out. Try drawing a square with sticks coming out and work out from there. That's really the only perspective stick figure guide I use, I do everything else freehand. Or just draw them with their hands behind their back! ;D I really can't help you much with people. The closest I come to drawing people is drawing anthropomorphic animals. I've done a few people, but nothing noteworthy. Once I get my scanner hooked up I might post some of my horrible, unholy failures so you can laugh and learn what not to do! ^_^;
