We have a black male cat short hair. He’s been fighting a lot lately, and recently he’s been losing hair. First, it was around his belly and a bit on the top of his head, now it’s happening on his sides.
As mush I know about cats I've never seen anything like this.
I’ll post some pictures later, once he shows up again. If anyone can tell me what is going on please do so.
I want to keep going to a vet as a last resort because of the price.

Well, I do love cats...but I'm not so sure on what might be wrong...
The fact he's fighting is pretty normal, my cat used to fight all the time until we neutered him. 0_o Since he's male, it's mostly because he's trying to protect his territory. Male cats are pretty dominant...you have to remember cats aren't like dogs, they're like people. They're stubborn, they'll only listen when they want to.
Now, about the hair losing thing...all I can think of is that he might have...err...mage...? I think that's what it's called. It's when animals (I'm not sure if it's all animals or just specific) lose their hair. My dog had it.
