I watched my boyfriend play it, and it seemed okay... of course, 'okay' seems to best discribe the Tales series...
I didn't play it myself, but it seems to suffer from the same "all battles are insanely easy" symptoms that Phantasia had.

Wow, something me and Dessa don't agree on 0_0 ...
I LOVE the "Tales of" series! The story's tend be a bit on the "been done before" side, but the characters and the gameplay are MAGNIFICENT!
ToS was really, REALLY fun (oh, and you can change the difficulty level Des.) It's fun to try to figure out new ways to make ridiculously large combos ^.^ . ToS's story was actually pretty interesting after the first section of the game. And I simply loved all the characters (especially Genis and Zelos ^^ .)
In fact, I bought a Gamecube SIMPLY to play ToS ^_^ .

Yay, I'm getting the game for Christmas. I swear, none of the stores had it during the summer where I'm at. I will finally get it after longs months of waiting. Sheena is so cool.

Lovely-sama, this isn't the first thing we've disagreed on... I don't like dubs, remember?
Anyway, I didn't say it was a bad game, I just said it seemded fairly mediocre... of course, this was also right after my GAME FROZE RIGHT AFTER I DEFEATED DHAOS in ToP... I was majorly mad...
I don't have a GC, and it doesn't seem like they're gonna bring over the PS2 version of the game, so it's not likely that I'll get to play ToS... but I do need to figure out how to fix my ToP...
I'm just glad that the group who made ToP (the first game, BTW) decided to also make Star Ocean... I like Star Ocean... I like the "move left and right and up and down" on the screen better than the "move left and right".

Lovely-sama, this isn't the first thing we've disagreed on... I don't like dubs, remember?. Lies! Lies! Your the evil twin aren't you ^_~ ? Anyhoo, For ToP did you play the SNES version or the nintendo version. I've played part of the nintendo version but the battle system and encounter rate got on my nerves. My teamembers AI was just sooooo stupid ;_; .

There's a NES version? I'm playing it on ZSNES... my partner's AI isn't that bad, except that occassionally Arche and Klarth use spells that heal the enemies... I really hate Dhaos' castle... Klarth's Maxwell is the only thing that can do damage to half the enemies...
And I'm not evil... you're the one who's avatar says that she's a member of the X-Laws...

And I'm not evil... you're the one who's avatar says that she's a member of the X-Laws... *laughs nervously * Eheheheheheeh ^^; . *cough* Anyhoo, I meant to say the SNES version and the Playstation version ^^;. I've played the SNES version but not the Playstation version. I haven't advanced much in the ZSNES version because the other Tales of games have spoiled me when it comes to AI and game mechanics ^^; . (that, and the translation is iffy.) The Playstation version apparently uses the "Tales of Destiny" battle engine, and fleshes out the characters more. GAAAA!!! I really dislike Namco for never bringing the game over. (what I REALLY dislike Namco for though, is the fact that they never brought over the REAL Tales of Destiny 2 ;_; ....)

Tales of Phantasia is an old-school SNES game, which was later released on the PS1. Neither was released in the US (side note: at least part of the group that made ToP split off and created Star Ocean. That is why ToP and SO1 are so similar).
Then came the Tales of Destiny games for the PS1/PS2. Now, there's no difference between the Japanese and American ToD games... however... Japanese ToD2 is not US ToD2... US ToD2 is actually a different game called "Tales of Eternia".
ToS is the only (so far) GameCube game. The upcoming Tales of Rebirth game will be for PS2.

Next time, to be specific, when talking about Japan only games, I would like to see you use "Super Famicom", as the console is known under that name in Japan. By the way, the Genesis in the U.S. is the Mega Drive in Europe and Japan. Tales of Phantasia is an old-school SNES game, which was later released on the PS1. Neither was released in the US (side note: at least part of the group that made ToP split off and created Star Ocean. That is why ToP and SO1 are so similar). If you notice, both Lovely and I have noted that ToP is not available in the US, and both of us have noted that it CAN be played on the 'ZSNES,' which is a SNES emulator. So yes, it can be played on an 'SNES,' (either emulated or modded).

Internally, an SNES and a SFC are the same thing, BUT when referring to the console itself, i'd still prefer the "SFC" name as it was never officially released for any "SNES" named consoles. Also, on the actual consoles, region chips prevented European things being played on Japanese/North American things, and the shape of the Japanese and the North American products prevented their products from being played with each other. In other words, in order to play Tales of Phantasia on a U.S. SNES, one has to physically modify the console so the cart can fit in. In Europe, one would have to mess with the region chp or find a way to get around it. If you notice, both Lovely and I have noted that ToP is not available in the US, and both of us have noted that it CAN be played on the 'ZSNES,' which is a SNES emulator. So yes, it can be played on an 'SNES,' (either emulated or modded).
