I guess your right. But what about the villians tendincy to have their final hideout be in some weird place like the moon, or the center of the earth, or a pocket dimension? Or is that the ominous ring of land?

hmm... don't remember... then again, except for the pocket dimension (which is generally where you fight the final boss, but not an actual hideout), there are plenty of games where the final area is somewhere semi-normal that I don't know if it would count.

Here are a few of my own:
The Law of new Square Enix main characters If the Square Enix main character is relatively new, he will be clueless and not have any since of discretion. He will not understand that this world is different from his, and he will always manage to offend someone *coughtidusandsoracough*
The BlitzBall law In mini-games that require NPCs to perform tasks, BlitzBall for instance, the other team will be very skilled and your character's team will suck.
The Law of the new Pokémon games #1 Half the time, the Gym Leader will give you their most useless move once you beat them.
The Law of the new Pokémon games #2 Your rivals aren't mean, but are actually very nice. They are so nice, in fact, that it starts to get annoying.
The Law of all Pokémon games #1 When you walk into a Pokémart, there will be lots of shelves, but you can only get things at the counter, for some reason.

mikeyl- the purpose of the cliché is that it's a cliché in many, if not most games. Not just one game or game series.

well, here's one that I find to be pretty common: Often, you have to travel back to the starting point to find a special item that was out of reach before, or to fight some final boss.
