The bar was thinning out. It was a work day tomorrow and most of the patrons had left imbibed and happy. Only the regulars stayed to finish their drinks and find out the final score on tonight's game.
Damien snorted at his Oracle Bell and took another sip from the bottle in his hand.
"Alright. Who is it?" Gus smirked and kicked his feet on top of the empty chair next to him. He was too young to drink legally...but that didn't stop him from hanging out with the rest of the Shamans as word of their preliminaries came and went.
"Pebble? Gus...what kind of name is Pebble? Is this thing working right...I wonder if it needs knew batteries?" Damien said the words but the only thing he was fixing was his thirst. "What stupid Shaman calls themself...eh?" Damien had caught Gus' face.
He wasn't smiling anymore...
"Gus you always smile...what the hell?"
"She uses pebbles as weapons." Gus' tone was serious as he looked around the bar. Some other Oracle Bells had chimed and blinked to life...there would be a couple other fights tomorrow.
Damien's eyes lit up and he looked incredulously at Gus' serious face.
"She!? Pebbles!? This will be my easiest fight yet."
"Yeah...well...it was nice knowing you." Gus kicked the chair out from under his feet and stood up to walk away. Damien snatched his wrist to keep him there.
"What do you know, little shaman?" Damien's tone was angry now. Gus didn't know if it was the alcohol, or stupidity...but both of those were good reasons to blow it off and not attack for Damien's rudeness. Besides...Gus liked this place, and he wasn't sure they'd let him back in if he 'accidentally' broke a table with Damien's head.
Gus was smiling again. He didn't like Damien all that well anymore and so...
"She only uses pebbles as weapons...she throws them with her hand." Gus flicked his arm and twisted his wrist to get it back from Damien. "I hear she's about my age."
This set Damien off into another fit of laughter.
"There's a saying...that 'the smallest pebble can change the course of the mightiest river'. She comes from a tribe north of here in the mountains. She knows how to use itty-bitty earth spirits and place them into tiny stones...makes them go farther, and she can control the direction of them in mid-flight."
Gus had to speak louder to keep up with Damien's laughter.
"She killed her last two opponents." Gus kept smiling. It took a few minutes for the information to seep through Damien's beer-soaked brain.
"They found the last one with a pebble stuck in his windpipe." The look Gus received was priceless. It was also the last time he would ever see Damien again.
Gus turned and walked to the bar. "So like I said...it was nice knowing you."
