Hi! ;D I live in the UK so I've never seen the Japanese version. But thanks to Shaman King Uncensored, I have a good idea of the Japanese version. So, yeah, they do curse. Anyway, welcome to the board! Actually, I'm still a 'Cute Newbie' .

Isn't swearing non-existisnt in the Japanese language? Or they don't consider it to be nearly as strong, anyway. Welcome to the SKU! We hope you enjoy your stay here! *bounces around in his bunny suit and showers Krystal in carrots and chocolate easter eggs*

Actually, I'm not sure. I went to this site called Oversoul. I read the Episode scripts and there were a few words.

Let's see...ummm...yes...yes there are.
When I was in high school, I forget what year, there was a Japanese foreign exchange student living right next door to me (I never knew her though). People kept asking her how to say specific curse words in Japanese and she would tell them.
And just because...
Baka means idiot, if you want to count that as a curse word.
I'm also going to assume that pretty much every language out there has words that are considered curse words. I remember back in high school looking up curse words in this huge French dictionary my best friend owned. Yeah, we were quite bored that day...ah...memories...
Edit: Wait, your asking about Shaman King cursing aren't you?

Warning: This post has contains a bit of harsh language. But, it's only for instructional purposes. Japanese doesn't really have strong curse words like in english. It's all in your tone and the way you adress a person that makes a word really rude or not. For example, a character can say "Kuso" and some people would translate that as "crap" or "shit". The S word having a stronger degree of "naugtyness" in english, whereas most people wouldn't consider the word "crap" a big deal. When a sub or dub adds a lot of curse words, or translates things more harshly then it originally was it's called "seventeening". Personally, I dislike that practice for two reasons. One, well... it's vulgar . Two, you'll inevitably run into someone on the internet who says "Well, so and so CURSES in the original but not the dub! I hate it when they do that! So and so was BAD @ss in the orginal!!!!111" So yeah... As a side note: It's also anoying when people don't realise that when romanizing Japanase, "r"'s and "l"'s are interchangable . exp: random internet person:"It's KIRARA not KILALA"! Why did they change it!!!111" Lovely:because it doesn't matter .

I have to back up Lovely on what she said...the stronger you say a word, the harsher it's meaning.
A soft "tyotto" translates into a "thanks for offering but, no thank you." when someone offers you something.
A hard "tyotto" translates into "HEY!" which shows up in most animes where kids are trying to yell at someone and get their attention.
I got yelled at alot by my sensei in Japanese class for saying words too loudly or with too much force.
As far as someone cursing in a sub and not cursing in a dub, it all comes down to the translation.
My favorite example of a perfect translation is in Princess Mononoke. There's a line in the english version where the monk says, "this soup tastes like piss".
A literal translation of what is said in the japanese version is "this soup tastes like water." BUT because of how it's said, the best english equivalent isn't the literal translation, it's what I used in the paragraph above.
This is a whole other can o' worms, but honorifics and how you use words can also come into play...there's gotta be like, five different levels of saying a word with enough honor depending on the person you're addressing. I was always told never ever use a dictionary form of a verb when speaking to someone...only if I'm yelling at my dog for being bad...it's considered really offensive used on humans.
Also, since I'm a guy, I can use "chaa" when referring to tea. Women have to use "ochaa". I would sound very polite if I used "ochaa" and my fiance would sound rude if she used "chaa".
On the whole women speech vs. men speech; if I want to say, "it's true." I would use "hontoo da yo." and my fiance would use "hontoo yo."
If I used "hontoo yo."...I'd sound like a gay guy.
Hope this makes the language more confusing for you and gets you interested in taking some classes on it in college ^_^
LC
Has flashbacks of "odenwa" - literally: "most honorable phone"

.... You know, Manta's "damns" could just as easily be translated as "darns" (as I've pointed out earlier).... I'm just sayin'...
(ah, but in a general sense, "damn" tends to sound more natural.)
