I was sniffing around the 4Kids site and found some interesting tidbits:
"In January 2002, 4Kids Entertainment entered into a multi-year agreement with Fox Broadcasting to lease the television network's Saturday morning programming block. 4Kids launched the all-new kids broadcast network - the Fox Box - on September 14, 2002."
Didn't realize that the entire Fox Box was owned and created by 4Kids...
On another page the info goes on to say:
"With the acquisition of the Fox children's programming block, 4Kids received the right to retain all revenue from network advertising sales during the time period. 4Kids Ad Sales was created in January 2002 to sell advertising time to companies who want to reach children and tweens."
So really, Shaman King is just a revenue for commercials right now...they've listed that the license will be open in 2004...what do you think a license would cost for a limited release Shaman King subtitle?
Last tidbit I found interesting...I didn't know this: "4Kids Entertainment Home Video has selected FUNimation Productions, Ltd., as its exclusive distributor in the U.S. A leader in the industry, FUNimation is known for their innovation and successful track record with properties such as Dragon Ball Z."
Anybody know how FUNimation is with distribution? GS777, this sounds like a question for you...

Well, it depends on the series. When they first started out, Funimation did an absolutely miserable job with their DVD's. (http://dbzoa.net/dbzuncensored/editorial/editorial17.html) Overall, DVD releases were slow, and low in content and episodes. Yet, they sold very well. Why?
Because DBZ has the most viewer and money potential of any anime that's come from Japan so far. Funimation could afford to make countless mistakes and get away with it. And as the episodes sold like hotcakes (over 16,000,000 tapes) Funimation became more and more convinced of their "genius" being a factor in the equation. My strong personal feelings towards them aside, everything outside of DBZ has been a fine release. There aren't really too many complaints about their other DVD's. So, if 4Kids agreed to let them handle it it could be like with ADV and Saint Seiya.
You have to take into account, however, how greedy and selfish said companies are. I've spoken to CEO Gen Fukunaga before, and I can most definitely attest. Funimation and 4Kids laugh and scoff at a YGO or Pokemon uncut release because "there's just not a strong enough fan from the 'otaku' hardcore anime base to make it profitable." (even though EVERY regular purchaser of Shonen Jump is a potential fan)
Futhermore, these animes don't really have "big hardcore fanbase markets" like Funi and 4Kids say they "need in order to be 'profitable enough'" because most hardcore fans don't bother with these series. Once they hear it's done by 4Kids, they leave. Too bad subbers out there aren't subbing more 4Kids properties like Pokemon and YGO (YGO especially, which so far only has "Chingrish" Hong Kong crappy subs) or this could force change on them.
However, there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel for Shaman King fans. The powers that be at Funi and 4Kids have deemed that "there MIGHT be enough of a hardcore fanbase to justify such a dual-release" thanks to Shonen Jump and fansubs and so, it's been stated as a possibility.
...
Still, it makes me feel sick to my stomach to hear them talk about and treat animes like this. They just sound so disgusting and uncaring, like they really hate anime but only tolerate it because it's their source of making money. Every company should just stick to DVD's and cut/uncut formats. They wouldn't lose money on this.
Although they haven't stated it, my personal belief is that this (English cut dub only) has more to do with an insane zeal to "protect" their kiddie image. I mean, sheesh, ever seen Blue Gender? They have a naked chick during the credit sequences and no advertisers still question the "hip kiddy" image Funi's created for DBZ.
Speaking of 4Kids stuff, dbzoa plans on hosting KevinTRod's "YGO Uncensored" in the future. He's also expressed interest in creating a similar alliance, "Anti-4Kids OA" that's like Dbzoa, only it focuses on 4Kids instead of Funimation. I'll keep you updated on any future developments with this project.

www.dbzoa.net/forum/showthread.php?s=e3d684c5c40ad4d32b6c50fc54251d6c&threadid=2187Also, this article explains how 4Kids and Funi hooked up. It doesn't surprise me since as the old saying goes, "Birds of a feather flock together" and Al Kahn and Gen Fukunaga seem to have uncanny amount in common with one another. Still... as disgusting and unethical of a company as Funimation is, they still have a lot of good points to them. At this point they've hopped completely in bed with 4kids, with both sides sharing voice actors (Schemmel for 4Kids, "Joey Wheeler" for Funimation) and other exchanges, so hopefully some of the good points Funimation has will rub off on 4Kids during these exchanges, no pun intended.

"Didn't realize that the entire Fox Box was owned and created by 4Kids..."
Of course they are. xD That would explain the similar voice actors, voice directors, script writers, etc...
"Schemmel for 4Kids, "Joey Wheeler" for Funimation"
Just FYI, Wayne Grayson does Joey's voice. o_O

Yu-Gi-Oh movie being released here before Japan? That doesn't sound very likely. Why would it be dubbed before it was even released? The only Yu-Gi-Oh movie I know of is based on the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh, but since it was based on such a different plotline, it would be impossible to dub it and have in make sense here. I have heard of another movie coming out, but it would obviously have to be based on the current Duel Monsters storyline. And since Japan is already a few seasons ahead of the dub, it's pretty unusual that the movie dub would be released before it's originating country.

" Of course they are. xD That would explain the similar voice actors, voice directors, script writers, etc... Same music.... I've only seen an episode or two of the dubbed Sonic X, but I realised that they re-use the same music tracks in many instances. I heard once that Funimation WANTED to release a sub track of Yugi-oh, but that 4kids wouldn't let them. Hence one of the many reasons the online anime comunity tends to reaaaally hate 4kids. How do I feel about Funimation? I really liked their release and dub of the Fruits Basket anime. However, lately, Funimation has been releasing their series with only 3 episodes a disk. Which is... anoying to say the least. To be honest, I never really cared all that much about Funimation before, but recently rumors have been spreading about that they might have 2 series that I am incredibly interested in. We'll see, we'll see.

nuh-uh. u see, the new Yugioh movie was done by a U.S.-Japan team, and it doesnt hav anything to do with any of the seasons. here is a brief summary: In Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie, after the conclusion of the Battle City Tournament, deep below the sands of Egypt, an ancient evil has awakened. Anubis, who was defeated centuries ago by Yugi's mysterious alter ego - the ancient Pharaoh - has returned for revenge. Wielding the power of the Eighth Millennium Item, Anubis is determined to destroy Yugi and take over the world! for more info, go to www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=3827. and to prove my point about it being released, here is the site: www.janime.net/.

"recently rumors have been spreading about that they might have 2 series that I am incredibly interested in." Which two series, may I ask? Possibly Full Metal Alchemist and Kodomo no OmochaThis is ENTIRELY rumors. So, I'll just quote from AnimeonDVD.com. ------------------------------ QuoteClearly and truly in the rumor mill (07:01 AM EST): In this week's edition of "AoD Crisis of the Week", a few forum readers have noticed that "http://www.fullmetalalchemist.com" is now under the ownership of FUNimation. Absolutely nothing should be implied by this of course since we were told that it meant nothing when Prince of Tennis found itself under the same happening late last year. FUNimation also appears to have some hope for Kodomo no Omacha as the registered kodocha.tv back in August of 2003 as well, just three days prior to creating the Full Metal Alchemist record.
Again, this is all rumors and does not indicate an actual license, but is part of the fun of the hunt that many of those who wonder about licensing enjoy pursuing.--------------------------- They own the webspace, but it doesn't exactly mean that they own the series. Only that they are trying to. Anyhoo, I simply LOVE those two series so I'm curently keeping an eye on Funi.
