I, having not seen the original anime or just about any anime, I am probably sounding very naive so please don't kill me.
I do not have a problem with the dub of Shaman King, Pokemon, Sonic X, One Piece, or most other animes, except Yugioh, but I'll leave that one alone.
Yes, the running gags are pretty lame, but 4kids is gearing these shows towards the around 7 year old bracket I believe. With how the F.C.C. runs things and with how we have parents in America who will sue at the drop of a hat if the wind blows the wrong way, they have to butcher these shows if they ever want them shown over here. And I for one would rather have a Shaman King with terrible jokes than not have Shaman King at all.
Now I know I could purchase the DVD and everything would be great, but I like some of the changes with the dub, not all of them, but a few. I'm also a lazy person who doesn't like to read throughout the whole episode. I would like to be able to watch the show and not stare at subtitles during the whole thing.
I do enjoy your comparisons Lovely and I do agree that there are some very strange things that are changed from the dub like the food and the fact that even English text is wiped by the editors. But I still can't wait to get home from work on Sundays (yes the foxbox is on Sundays in my area) and watch the episode of Shaman King I taped in the morning.
Okay, I'm sorry if my post was totally misinformed please feel free to tell me where I am wrong, way wrong, or on a different planet. Thank you

It's an added 4kids running gag. And an annoying one at that. While it's true that in the original Japanese version Yoh liked to eat, he normally wasn't all that specific about it. EDIT: Oh yeah, I love your subject title for this thread Saturn ^o^ . That reminds me of the Ash's mom reminding Ash to change his underwear gag - I believe that's a 4Kids gag too.

That reminds me of the Ash's mom reminding Ash to change his underwear gag - I believe that's a 4Kids gag too. And then there's the "Tristan farting" running gag in Yu-Gi-Oh, dub addition...

yeah some of thier jokes anger me cuz they took a teenager based anime and turned it into a kids show. digimon is like that in japan, and so is yu-gi-oh! (ie. bakura slaming the top of his hand thru a point of a castle on a game board)

I noticed while watching my reruns of season three digimon the other day that there was quite a bit of violence that could not be edited out. I watched the episode where Leomon gets killed by Beelzemon. Did you know that beelzemon has two guns that actually fire bullets, and not flowers or air? They actually show him holding the gun to Gallantmons head and telling him goodbye. I'm astonished I've never noticed that before.

the reason of why i like the original more is mainly because of the music and voice actors.
I will admit...the dub opening is better than any other opening 4kids has done...it actually makes sense in comparison with yu-gi-oh's 'its time to d-d-d-duel!' but the backround music in the dub is just sort of annoying in my opinion...it all sounds the same to me...and very 'cartoonish'. The original music is better in my opinion...though not all of it...for example: the x-laws theme >_< i find the chanting in it annoying..
Now, the voices, i find the voices in the original better as well....theyre more experianced in my opinion...especially anna's seiyuu, hayashibara megumi, like lovely mentioned in one of her comparisons, the episode where anna cried when tokagero possesed yoh, her english voice actress couldn't match with the emotion megumi-san did in the original, sure yoh sometimes sounds like a girl in the original, but his english voice actor sounds too old for him...in my opinion...
edits and changes dont really bother me...(except for 'zeke' *cringes*) because of the fact that i know why they do that....because most of the dubs audience are a bunch of little kids whose mothers will freak out if they hear the word 'God' in a cartoon...and name changes...they dont bother me that much either, its only so americans can actually say a person's name, since some japanese names might be difficult for them to pronounce.
im sure dubs piss a lot of fans out, but like len says, if you dont like it why watch it? unless your a freak like me who like to compare it with the original o_0....all in all, dubs aren't all that bad....like yoh says in shaman king 'everybody do things for a reason'.

bro: they did edit out gargomon threating rika which i don't know why. all he was doing was pointing his gun at her, and he can't help the fact that his hands are machine guns. and they don't edit out beelzemon's threatening anyways...what was our original topic again?

The topic has to do with strange edits that 4kids and other companies that license anime make.
I remember that episode. Gargomon did threaten Rika. I noticed in the dub all he did was continue to laugh as he pointed his gun at Rika. He really didn't have to say anything to show that a threat on Rikas life was made. That was truly intense!

ahh so it's basically edits, huh?
in first season of digimon, where puppetmon came in. he gave TK a gun, and of couse that was edited out. lol at least it wasn't a hammer thing ;D

Something like that, I can understand. For one, guns are a huge no no, or at least they were. Later Digimon episodes, One Piece and even Shaman King have now been showing firearms.
Another problem with that seen is the fact that TK is not only a minor, but a child (what was he 7,8).
Some things they edit are senseless, but others are understandable.
As for the cheeseburgers gag, yeah it's kind of getting on my nerves too.
