In Reincarnation Seventy-nine, there's a shaman wearing a pointed black hood. Well, it's supposed to be white. This guy has no ties to the KKK; the headpiece is just worn by certain priests in Spain.
Do you think Viz should have done this? I don't see why they couldn't have just added a footnote about the hood. C'mon, they've done it when explaining about swastikas (the real ones, not Hitler's.)

Uh, well yeah they did it.
And, in the issue of Shonen Jump that chapter was in, the hoods were white.

Yeah, they werw white in the magazine.
And while they kept the manji in that OP eppy, they've edited the one on Neji into an X.
Go figure.

And while they kept the manji in that OP eppy, they've edited the one on Neji into an X. And that didn't really even look like a manji. I mean, well it did, but sorta not. At least it really was an X in the anime.

They left it untouched in the magazine? I didn't know because I didn't read that issue. Boy, do I feel stupid.

Wait, so is it edited in the Graphic novel and not in Shounen Jump? Or have we not reached that point in the manga yet?

We've passed that part long ago. It wasn't edited in SJ, but guessing from this thread it was edited in the graphic novel.

Talk about not making sense. You would think that they would edit the Shonen Jump and keep it uncensored in the graphic novels. I guess they assume more kids go read the graphic novels at Borders or where ever than read Shonen Jump by subscription or at the supermarket. Well, at least they left uncensored someplace. It's a start.

Well, I wouldn't say they don't give a damn about us because they leave most stuff untouched. As long as they don't butcher characters' personalities or change the names, I'm fine. I see why some people would get angry about the hood.

Except that VIZ probably thought that they would only get press mails in those rather employee-specific e-mails...
VIZ is editing the panels because they believe that they would make more money if they did than if they didn't - It's that simple.
I'm spreading the e-mail list to other anime sites.
EDIT: I posted the list to AnimeNation and Anime on DVD.
They care about "us" insofar that they want "us" to buy their manga. They make small cuts when they think that they can get away with it.
BTW, I still buy Shonen Jump because I am not against manga editing in the serialized magazine format; I am against most editing in the specific GN format.

As long as they don't butcher characters' personalities or change the names, I'm fine. They changed the names in the detective Conan manga. And no, I don't buy that line from them that they were "forced" by Japan to do it. They've lied about "creator support"* so many times, that I know they're probably lieing about that too. Also, edits have slowly been growing over the years, so I assume it won't be long until we get some personality butchering. ---------------------------- Creator support for edits= Viz: Hey, this title JUST WON'T SELL if we don't make edits! Creator: Um... Ok, then, I guess. Viz: WOO! We have creator support! ---------------------------- Sorry for my tone all, I'm just bitter at Viz and editng companies in general. Pretty much all my hobbies have been getting edited lately. It's great being told by the companies themselves that I'm apparently too old for my hobbies and I need to be coddled.

Write letters to the booksellers (e.g. Barnes and Noble, Borders) and tell them about manga you refuse to buy due to edits.

(smacks forehead) Man, why didn't I see that obvious solution before?
Anyway, I doubt edits will become more frequent. The reason most otaku buy manga is to see what they won't show you on dubbed anime. If the companies are smart, they'll leave their products alone.
