Viz has an interesting habit of keeping Japanese names for some manga and changing others.
Those kept: *Yu-Gi-Oh! (Yugi Mutou and Katsuya Jonouchi stay as Yugi and Jonouchi) *Shaman King (Manta Oyamada stays as Manta)
Those changed: *MegaMan NT Warrior (Netto Hikari and RockMan to Lan Hikari and MegaMan) - Unsurprising, since even Capcom changed names in the games *Case Closed (Shin'ichi Kudo and Ran Mori to Jimmy Kudo and Rachel Moore)
So how does Viz make these decisions?

I dunno... I think that the Rockman names were changed cuz of the whole "Megaman" franchise (that's how 4kids ruined Pocket Monsters- they nabbed the anime, changed it, then had to change everything associated with it to go with the show). Anyway, I only condone name changes if they are direct translations (Usagi=Bunny, etc.).

Viz says the name changes for Case Closed is due to a request from the Japanese liscensor. I'm not sure whether I believe that or not *shrugs*. Anyhoo, Japanese liscensor or not, I WILL NOT support it. Some people probably think it's silly of me to boycott a series simply because a few names are different. But look at it this way, I have a LOT of manga series I'm interested in, and my funds are limited. If a series isn't up to the standards that make me happy, well, it's just not worth it. And that's my stand on the matter. Sorry for the rant, It's a bit of a sensitive issue for me.
Also, though it might not sound like it I really DO love Detective Conan/Case Closed. I even like the dub ( I love the voices even though the name changes get on my nerves). I just don't love the series enough to pay for those annoyances (talking about the manga, concerning anime I mostly rent now-a-days anyways.)
Concerning RockMan/MegaMan. I'm guessing it was Capcom's decision there. "Megaman" is a big name for the series in the U.S *shrugs*.

Here's the one I don't get... Why was Sado Yasutora changed to "Chad" in the Bleach manga... he's the ONLY one who had a name change.

He's called "Chad" in the original too isn't he? I mean, that's what they call him in the anime...
The main thing that bothered me about the manga was that they kept calling a c_ockatiel a parakeet. I mean, SURE, they are in the same family, but still...

In the credits on ANN, he's listed as Sado... he hasn't shown up yet as far as I've seen in the anime (I've seen episode 1, and he shows up in 3 or 4... I think there's only 3 episodes out so far).

For Conan, I will hound Viz and the licensor to release a Japanese-names version of the manga, and I will do EVERYTHING in my power to make that happen. In my opinion, Detective Conan is not the series to change names for. I don't care if names get changed in Pokemon or other kiddie series, but Case Closed: Detective Conan isn't something that should have name changes. TokyoPop screwed up in their decision to change names in Initial D too. Viz says the name changes for Case Closed is due to a request from the Japanese liscensor. Granted I don't care for the name Jimmy myself but I'm surely not going to go and lose sleep over it.

But I'm hearing that there are script changes in the Conan anime because of the names (e.g. because clues are based on names, they have to change around the clues as well as the name.) - Also, Kogoro Mori (Richard Moore) was named after Kogoro Akechi, a fictional Japanese detective. I would like to see things like this in the footnotes of a manga... Also, I believe the French and Germans got to keep the original names. (So why not the Americans?) Also, Viz published Yu-Gi-Oh! with the Japanese names, which makes me hungry for a Japanese name version of Conan! Oh, and I know Viz planned to use th Japanese names:http://store.viz.com/browse/DTVCONAN/s.Uea9eBI0 I think I know how to get the "no major changes" Conan manga I want: Contact Gosho Aoyama himself!
