This post is spoiler free, and is more of a recommendation than anything else ^^ .
EDIT: (and you can buy the game new from here)
I recently bought Shadow Hearts:Covenant due to a recomendation I saw on RPGfan. I found the game cheap, only about $20.
The game's unoficial title is "Shadow Hearts 2."
I had never played the original game due to it's "M" rating. Y'see, I don't ussually play "M" rated games because I don't like gore.
ANYHOO, Shadow Hearts II is rated "T", and it was said that you don't REALLY need to play the first to know what's going on, so I decided to give it a shot.
Simply put... I LOVE, this game.
You can read my initial impressions here
As I said in that, the graphics are gorgeous and the characters, designs and locations are interesting.
The time frame, an alternate reality version of our world during world war I, is incredibly interesting as well.
Monster design ranges from the odd to the damned creepy to the "WHY? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE THAT MONSTER ;_; ??!!"*
(*There's a realistic looking little roach monster. I have a phobia... soo.... It was only in one dungeon though ^^.)
The game is one of those "serious" RPG's, but here's the thing though... this game is also DAMNED FUNNY. Though, sometimes funny in a very wrong way... let's just say... there's a dominatrix involved ^^;...
But there's also humor that involves teasing the RPG genre in general. While going through a certain dungeon, one of the main characters comments on how stereotypical the place is.
There's also a HILARIOUS mini-game/section of the game involving a spoof of another game genre . Not to mention the way certain flashbacks to the previous games are told.
The main male character SEEMS like he would be the typical, FULL OF ANGST-tm (Ala- Squall) hero. But....
He has a wicked sense of humor and he just ENJOYS some of the situations he gets himself into. He's a bit of an ass, but a LIKABLE ass. He also seems to have a bit of ADD at times...
I hear that once you hit the second disk, the humor tones down a good deal, but so far... my stomach hurts from laughing at some of these parts.
The battle system is fun once you get used to it. You are actually ENCOURAGED to make the battles go quickly, and you're also penalised if you take too long.
It's incredibly satisfying perfecting your combo's and finishing off a battle unscathed.
There's no inns, but with a certain (cheap)item that you purchase in game, you can be healed completely at any of the conveniently placed save points.
I just can't recomend this game enough. I've played about 20 hours so far, and I am thourougly enjoing myself.
If you like Final Fantasy's and Xenosaga's then this game is deffinetly for you.
Any body else ever play this game? If you have, PLEASE don't say any spoilers. For my sake, please!
