I was walking home from school today, when I realised; Aside from Manta, Yoh has almost no friends who weren't trying to kill him originally. XD Ryu= Tried killing Yoh Faust= DEFINATELY tried killing Yoh XD Ren= Yep HoroHoro is sort of a grey area. ^^ He doesn't really want to kill him. But, in the manga, they're not friends before their fight. Chocolove is an exception, but then, he's not around for so long. And even he doesn't trust Yoh properly to begin with. I dunno where the hell Lyserg stands in this, that kid has been messed up in the head since he joined the X Laws. XD Then again, considering his past, I guess it's only natural Yoh shouldn't be good at making friends. ^^;

Hmmm, well what about people like Amidamaru, Anna, and Tamao? Or would you consider the relationship amongst them differently?

If you think about it, that's the way that most character relationships in action shonen anime get started. If it's a male fighter-type character, then they will almost ALWAYS start out as a rival first. Shows like Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Rave Master, all of these are the same way.

True....>< Well, Amidamaru is a ghost... ...That makes no sense. >> Anna is his fiance, and actually, (spoiler, I think )** she DID want him to die when they met. When they met, she told him she hated him and said "DIE", to him as well. And Tamao...well..she loves the guy. XD; And I guess it's because she was an apprentice of the Asakura family, so she wouldn't really have wanted to kill him. ?

Well, by 'friends', I meant 'those who travel with him'. ^^
And yeah, I forgot to mention Anna, but she does as good as want Yoh dead half the time. XD

lol...male characters are always rivals, and female characters are usually love interests. A little sad, if you look at it that way.

Sonic and Tails raren't rivals. Well, there's Knuckles. XD And Amy likes Sonic, but not vice versa (OK, REALLY he does, but he won't admit) *shot for relating everything to Sonic*

Well, like I see it, anime guy can't just be FRIENDS, they need to fight each other first to see who is the "friend" and who is the "minion-like friend" or "Plotting Friend". Actually, most real guys are like that, too...

hmm...I never noticed this, but everyone's right. I'm almost all shonen manga/anime, the guys are all rivals, fight, MAYBE become friends. Girls are just love based roles. It kinda sucks...

Gotta love those exeptions though eh? Yugi And Joey (for lack of ability to spell his Japenese name) really don't seem like strong rivals at all, which I think is pretty cool, they have quite the relationship in my opinion.
I would just like to plug for another of my favourite shows by mentioning Samantha from Medabots. There was a girl who had almost nothing to do with being a love interest what so ever. I almost fear she was a boy in the japanese version at times, but, I pretty much know (read-hope) this is not true. I just think Medabots is so under-rated, its plot per episode was really well done in my opinion.... anyways...
I think Shaman King does a good job about not lending itself to anime stereotypes, although Yoh does have friends who tried to kill him, he does have almost the same amount who are friends with him because he is a good person.

I agree. I mean some books (in general) have way to many stereotype people.

Damn you Resurie and your ability to post faster than me XP ** Yes, in volume 19, when Yoh first meets Anna, or more like runs into her (Not literally) Anna looks at him calmly then says 'Do you want to die?' with cold scary eyes...then Yoh cries XP
But hey, Anna hated humans so meh.**

And those that do differently are just considered femenist... it is pretty sad, I supose. Of course, shonen stuff is aimed at guys. And guys like having freinds who'v proven themselves worth having.

Hey what about in One Piece? Luffy doesnt become friends with any of his rivals (well as far as i read). Zoro wasnt really a rival cuz he wasnt really aiming to be a pirate, same with Nami. Usopp could've been a rival if he hadnt joined their crew, but they were all so bonded. Hmmmm......Sangi, dream isnt the same as Luffy, and anyway Luffy wants to be a pirate and Sangi wants to find the All Blue so he can have as much ingredients as he can...(erm is that its right name?)
