.....eh? Makes sense, I guess... they wanna keep her name intact, but it IS a pretty obvious drug reference...
...so I guess this means no Peyote, huh? ;_;

Actually, this is an American publication - though this will reach the UK since VIZ made a deal with a British publisher..
"cant they take a joke? "
When we have groups like the "American Family Association"... nope.

Reminds me of Morphius... Meh, I understand the change, thought I can't say it's a good one. :\ Morphea... just sounds bad to me. EDIT: ...so I guess this means no Peyote, huh? ;_; Maybe they'll call him Peyotio. *shot*

I know it's a drug reference but the English manga says morphine when their talking about the actual drug. They let Faust say it in chapter 80. You can mention morphine when you're talking about the actual drug, but not when it's someone's name? I didn't make much snese did I? Oh well. It's not like I don't know who they're talking about.

*stares blankly at the page for a moment*
MORPHEA?!?!?
I understand that they don't want the evil soccer moms of d00m on their backs, but come on. They already have it rated T and mention drug references.
Yeesh, this is possibly worse than Roa becoming "Loa" in the English FMA.

Oh god, I knew this was coming ever since they did the whole Tamao "sweets" line. Something must have happened to REALLY rattle Shonen Jump, because they're slowly losing their edge. Wasn't their original motto "Providing uncut anime" or something? They're breaking the basic code the manga was founded upon! Shonen will soon become the 4Kids of manga. We must STOP the madness! Wow, I went on quite a rant, didn't I? *embarrassed* Oh, and please correct me if I'm wrong, by the way, I could be confusing this with another manga company. I was never had that good of a memory...

Dude, "sweets" was a euphemism, wasn't it? People in the US LOVE to use euphemisms. That's not the problem, although they could have thrown in a few more hints to make it a tad more obvious (which is why anime fans are angry - they wanted the comment to be direct).
The problem is that VIZ has been bowing to parental pressure. Scholastic pulled SJ from shelves due to parental complaints. I heard that even other anime fans had criticized the swearing, and so it's gone. VIZ wants SJ to be mainstream and therefore they do not wish to print blatantly offensive material, so they have settled on a certain amount of editing.
I would blame all the family associations who do this. Guys, send critical letters to them and try to win against them in debates. Criticize Scholastic too - their actions prompted this!
And no, I do not recall the whole "Providing uncut anime" motto. Then again I didn't get SJ till Issue 16.
Honestly, I wasn't too shocked by this. Even if drugs can be mentioned, I figured they weren't going to outright name a character after a drug like that. But at least Morphea has a hint of the reference.
By the way, did Morphea have a large bust in the original? In SJ she seems kinda flat-chested.

Oh boy... Shonen Jump needs to understand that people buy the manga because they wanna read the stuff which wasn't or couldn't be shown on T.V. Do they still mention Lyserg's last name in the manga? If so, then I don't think this edit isn't anything to really worry about.

While I can't exactly say I like this change: Morphine > Morphea > Chloe.
Somehow, I think age might also play a factor in this (probably THE main factor), as with the Hikaru no Go edits. If you recall Tetsuo's ciggarete has been changed twice to "gum" and a "firecracker", yet many of the older characters still smoke. Even in SK they've still kept scenes of Ryu smoking, and of course, Smoker and Sanji from One Piece still remain in tact.
I'm guessing that they don't want to make too many direct associations between a narcotic and a juvenille (or however the hell you spell it XP)

Wasn't Ryu 17 at the time ^^;. Ah, anyway, I'm kind of sad, but at the same time... well... at least it sounds similar (so- still retaining the joke somewhat) and they didn't change it to Chloe. Does anyone know how the name was originally written in katakana? But yeah, honestly, I'm not to suprised at Viz for doing this .
