At first, Shonen Jump was great, giving us fairly accurate translations of popular mangas. However, then they started to bend to the will of 4kids. Proof of this?
- In One Piece, Zoro's name switch to Zolo.
- In Shaman king, earlier on, they showed Ren bathing and you can see his butt. In more recent issues, when Ren comes out of the shower, his butt has clearly been erased. Also, when Ponchi/Conchi is peeing on Manta's head, it was edited to look like a water hose.
- Yu-Gi-Oh has been toned down quite a bit.
- And this last one is in the April 2005 issue, and it pissed me off to no end. No one I've talked to has noticed this. Flip to Dragon Ball Z, pages 332-333. An old man shoots at #17. #17 then CLEARLY starts to remove his gun from his holster, there's even a sound effect of him taking it out. On page 333, he' has his hand in a gun-holding position, but the gun has been COMPLETELY ERASED and an inaccurate-looking gun added into his holster. Then it makes it seem like he punches the guy.
I have sent many letters of complaint to Shonen Jump, all of which have been completely ignored. However, if you send letters as well, maybe our voices will be heard.

Um...excuse me but Zoro was changed to Zolo so they would not get sued. I forgot #17 had a gun in the original until someone mentioned it to me.
EDIT:They still show Ren's butt, but I could care less for that.

Can the word/name "zorro" even be something you can copywrite like that? I mean, "zorro" is spanish for "fox."
Anyhoo.... let's not get into THAT subject again. Please. The only reason it bothers me is for consistancy reasons. NOT for translation reasons (where it is technically valid.)
Anyhoo... yeah, if you like a manga series and it gets scheduled to run in the U.S Shounen Jump. Well, you're screwed. More than screwed... DOUBLE screwed. Be prepared for edits and the occasional odd translation and probably even some name changes! Weeee~
Yeah... I don't have a lot of love for Viz.

Oh boy...XD Don't even get me started on the Naruto attack names... Pinwheel Eyes??! o__O!? *ahem* Yeah...I was also wondering what's up with the Zoro/Zolo copyright thing...but ermm...doesn't anyone remember? The movie, "Zorro"?? Or was it "Zoro"? Guy with mask, left his mark on walls and junk. Maybe that's what's copyrighted? ><?

Lovely actually has a HUGE crush on masked Zorro. Aaah.. he's cool.... *cough* Anyways, I just don't think his name can be copywrited INSIDE a work of fiction that way (title, yes I can see that.) I mean, I've seen and read multiple books with people having the same names. Anyhoo.... we've had this name discussion too many times! I know I keep bringing it back but... we have to let go! So let's just credit it to "legal FEAR" and be done with it .

Few things...
- It's Zoro, not Zorro, so they can't sue
- it's RIGHT OF PARODY regardless, so they can't sue
- Zoro is nothing like Zorro other than the fact that they're both swordsmen (although COMPLETELY DIFFERENT types of swordsmen), so they can't sue
- Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 was obviously a rip off of Zorro. You don't see them getting sued
- Zolo is a dumb name anyway,

They make Pegasus J Crawford in yuugiou Maxamillion Pegasus in the Yu-gi-oh duelist graphic novels. Why? Is Crawford offensive somehow? You're right about Yu-gi-oh being toned down a bit, before they could say bast-you know, now the worst they seem to be able to say is hell. Correct me if I'm wrong
Oh, by the way, could anyone who has read the issue of shonen jump where yu-gi-oh millenium world started tell me whether they edited the bit where thoses statues with the swords impaled the Egyptian guy?

Zoro was used for over a year.
They would have changed it WAY sooner if they had any chance of being sued.
Anyway, I also harbor serious hate for VIZ. I can't *wait* to see what they do to Zettai Kareshi, Nana, and Count Cain in "Shoujo Beat".....Kami-sama help us all.

there goes any chance for US fans getting a REAL uncut... looks like I'll have to learn french... I would leard how to read Japanese... but I'm so slow it would take years. SJ has really started to get on my nerves with the edits... (I wanted to see Ren's but and I have a friend who wanted to see it more) XD

I can't *wait* to see what they do to Zettai Kareshi, Nana, and Count Cain in "Shoujo Beat".....Kami-sama help us all. I doubt they will do much to those series - Shojo Beat is rated for 17+, and none of these series are well known in the USA. The reason why editing increased in SJ is because SJ is more well known and because SJ is sold in places like Wal-Mart. In addition, the older market may be turning to the books in the stores. Viz probably decided that it isn't worth continuing to market SJ to an audience that would buy the GNs anyway. Also, SJ was pulled from Scholastic Book Fairs due to the content. Perhaps Scholastic needs to be bombarded with insults as well. How has it been toned down? If it's the language - Well, some fansubbers complained that the language was too harsh (as in people from Japan wouldn't talk in that manner). As for how to contact them, letters are nice, but one could also flood the forums (not a literal flood attack) with protests against SJ editing. www.animerica-mag.com/modules/newbb/ is a forum. Also, if anyone is on the "Viz Associates" program, there's a forum there that is open to such members. I started a thread at www.animerica-mag.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=750&forum=14. As for a letter I'm writing: "Dear Shonen Jump, I like receiving your U.S. Shonen Jump magazine in the mail, but I have become disappointed over recent trends in the magazine. You should tone down on the editing of your series in Shonen Jump. The magazine is rated T for Teen, so we (the readers) expect content to be almost completely uncut. Many readers will notice that Ren’s butt was erased, and readers will notice that 17 originally shot the old guy. Even if they don’t notice these things, a visit to the internet will show people talking on forums. The internet is making people more aware of how series are translated and edited. The teen demographic that loved your magazine when it first came out is starting to get disgusted over the perceived chumminess with 4Kids and the increase in editing that they feel is associated with 4Kids. 4Kids is a hated company among One Piece and Shaman King fans, and the One Piece dub on 4Kids TV is failing. If things progress further downward, you should reduce your relationship with 4Kids. If the One Piece dub is pulled, you should ask for Zolo to be renamed to Zoro, as the name “Zolo” is unpopular with One Piece fans. Also, if some stores want SJ to be toned down more than the “T” rating would suggest, I suggest that you pull SJ from those stores so that the quality of SJ will not be dragged down by the demands of those stores. As for the graphic novels, you should release Hikaru no Go unedited, and you should increase Hikaru no Go to a 10 and up rating to compensate. Also, you should add warnings telling people that the behavior of Tetsuo Kaga in Volume 1 is not okay and that his smoking habit can be fatal. Also, any of the edits made in the last several issues should not be made to the graphic novel versions of the series. Thank you for listening to my comments. Sincerely, XXXX"

Yeah, I noticed that SJ is getting tone down A LOT...>.< Their translation of Naruto always makes me shudder, though they didn't edit anything.
Regarding Yu-Gi-Oh--not all of the names are changed. Haga, Ryuzaki, Mai, and Shizuka so far got to keep their names, though Malik's and Isis's were changed. My belief is that if you're not Japanese, in Viz-land, you get a higher chance of having your name changed.

Marik is Marik in the French manga (which came out in 2000 or 2001 in France), and Ishizu is Ishizu in the French manga - I doubt that Ishizu is Isis in the Japanese (wouldn't Isis be "Aishizu"?) Oh, and the priestess is called Isis in the EN manga. I do concur with the belief.

Yeah, it seems all the characters in Yu-gi-oh duelist keep their names except Pegasus. Plus apparently they kept the 'gallows' duel where Yami Yugi nearly gets hanged, not that it would have been easy to edit that.
