I think it's also somewhat because of 4kids they toned down SJ... 4kids started advertising SJ, so the kids that watch the dubs would go buy the books.

4Kids has the rights of the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City sagas, all the monster and characters (new characters that haven't appeared before) names are gonna be dubbed. Only the monsters and a few characters are getting changes - Mai, Haga, Shizuka, Ryuzaki, Kajiki, and other characters are keeping their Japanese names.

Y'know, that Ren-butt edit was pointless...I mean, ya still see his butt...
And about the YGO name changes...I don't remember where but I heard that they're keeping the names of the "Japanese" characters, and using the English/romantisized names for the non-Japanese characters.
Ex: Malik--Marik (Egyptian) Pegasus J. Crawford--Maximillion Pegasus (American) etc.
Another thing about SJ is that they're seriously skimping on the manga and jacking up the price. That's what really makes me angry.
And yet I still can't stop myself from buying all that manga. It's like they worked some sort of nicotine into it somehow...I'm addicted...

I do not know of Marik's original name. If Takahashi has something in the Japanese version that reads "Malik", then I will be convinced that is his original name. Until then... Isn't SJ upping on the page count? I heard that they want to go weekly by reducing the price. Reducing the price doesn't necessairly mean cutting manga, but rather it means getting cheap paper. Why the cheap paper? Because in Japan manga anthologies aren't kept.

I think going cheaper, smaller, and weekly would probably do well for Shonen Jump. People would buy more Graphic novels to get a higher quality, "keeper" version of their favourite comics. And as a result, the comics might speed up a little (and I mean a little).
I must admit, as much as I really dislike the Naruto Edits (although they are a bit funny) I still subscribe to Shonen Jump without complaints, I read through them so fast, I don't have time to realize 17 doesn't have a gun, or some lines are removed from Ren's behind. I admire the spash pages, and remarkable art that sometimes graces important, or opening parts of manga stories, but I don't go looking for edits. When I read that DBZ part, I didn't even notice the edit. Mabey if I was a real big DBZ fan I would care. One has to realize, with DBZ, OP, SK and soon Naruto being on kids TV, kids are gonna pick up the magazine. Book stores don't regulate ratings for books most likily, especially ones with Yugioh characters on the cover. I really wish there was some way to keep the comics as they were, and still release them in an easy to obtain manner. One of the only options I see, if to keep the GNs completly uncut, and edit the newstand copies a bit so little Yu-Gi-Oh and DBZ fans are not "corrupted"
On that note, I would just like to add, that I think people go way to far with comics and TV "corrupting" youth. I watched power rangers when I was 5, and I am the least violent person I know.
In my opinion, as long as the stories and mythos are pretty much kept, I am happy just getting these stories at a pretty good price on a monthly basis.
(PS: sorry for yet another of my fairly non-coherant rambles, I always try to see all sides, and I am stuck as a fence sitter, I just like to voice my opinions, as varied and flip-floppy as they may be. ^_^)

None of the edits (that I'm aware of) bothered me much, except for the Ponchi/Konchi stuff. Attack name changes are fine with me, because...well...I dunno, they still make sense to me.

At first, Shonen Jump was great, giving us fairly accurate translations of popular mangas. However, then they started to bend to the will of 4kids. Proof of this? - In One Piece, Zoro's name switch to Zolo. It's techincally not wrong due to the "r/l" thing I'm sure you've heard of before, and it might have been a trademark issue(sure it might not be valid to some of you, but it could happen). Although they should have changed it from the start in any case, at least it would have been consistant.- In Shaman king, earlier on, they showed Ren bathing and you can see his butt. In more recent issues, when Ren comes out of the shower, his butt has clearly been erased. Also, when Ponchi/Conchi is peeing on Manta's head, it was edited to look like a water hose. Can't argue with that.- Yu-Gi-Oh has been toned down quite a bit. Examples?- And this last one is in the April 2005 issue, and it pissed me off to no end. No one I've talked to has noticed this. Flip to Dragon Ball Z, pages 332-333. An old man shoots at #17. #17 then CLEARLY starts to remove his gun from his holster, there's even a sound effect of him taking it out. On page 333, he' has his hand in a gun-holding position, but the gun has been COMPLETELY ERASED and an inaccurate-looking gun added into his holster. Then it makes it seem like he punches the guy. Can't argue with that.I have sent many letters of complaint to Shonen Jump, all of which have been completely ignored. However, if you send letters as well, maybe our voices will be heard. Again, you probably know about the "l/r" thing already. :/ Anyway, none of the edits bother me that much. Look at it this way - at least it's not, say, 4Kids editing SJ!(*shudders at thought*) Unless it really impacts the story somehow, I'm less inclined to complain about manga edits.

yes, I know about the l/r thing. The reason it annoys me is because A) They changed it way too late.
B) Zolo sounds retarded.
And I don't like that they did it without any explanation why. They just changed it, like we wouldn't notice.

Since Rin has been transliterated as "Lin" and "Lynn", one can get around this by pronouncing it using a rolled r to emulate the "l".

I do wonder, though... SK gets pretty intense later in the manga, so I'm wondering how they'll handle certain things. I'm also wondering if they'll keep Chocolove's name or change it.
I don't really mind Pegasus's name change, I just don't get WHY they changed it in the first place.
