I'm double posting but... meh, I'm the admin, I can do that .
Holy crap this dub episode made me mad.
I think my guard was taken down a bit by the fact that the last chunk of episodes have actually been fairly acurate or at least fairly close to the original mood and themes.
The dub of episode 44 completely changed the mood.
So basically, just about EVERYONE'S personality in this episode has been changed from how they were originally. Poor Pino is the greatest victim of this. Whereas originally he WAS fighting for the sake of his pride, he CERTAINALLY wasn't as huge of an ass as his dub counterpart was. The most annoying thing is that in the dub of episode 43 Pino was portrayed accurately so his new attitude in 44 is incredibly jaring.
Well, lets see... a quick list of changes (the main ones, So much was changed story AND personality wise in this episode that I had to write a BUNCH of notes.) Think of this as a mini-comparison.
In the begining, Pino was to be sacrificed BY HIS VILLAGE to Bazuv. This is why when Pino see's her he gets freaked out right away. She wasn't angry with him as she is in the dub though...
Manta and Faust's conversation changed. Faust was actually complimenting Manta on his attitude and calling Manta's heart the true strength of the group.
The boys WERE NOT showing off when eating in the resteraunt. They were actually pretty depressed about the events that occured in episode 43. Choco was trying to cheer them up and then they start mentioning THE BOOK which...
...Is what ticks off Pino a bit. Not the fact that they were showing off, the fact that these kids grow so much stronger with (in his mind) is very little work. This is sort of covered in the dub, but Pino is a LOT more cocky and rude about it in the dub.
Pino probably picks on Horohoro because they are both ice shamans.
Yoh, APOLIGISES to Pino for insulting his pride. Yoh is seemingly questioning his own reasons for fighting.
Ryu mentions that only Himself and Faust are capable to fight with Yoh. This is important, because it does come up later. Comes up a bit later in the dub too but...
In the dub, Yoh cheers Faust and Ryu on. Originally, Yoh seems rather shocked and touched that the two other Shaman are helping him.
The "MEPHISTO E" scene is cut. But that little bit that's still there just looks BAD. Cut it out or leave it in editors. Don't be so sloppy.
Faust actually lost his will to live when Anna brought back Eliza's spirit. It's Yoh who encouraged Faust to go on.
Ryu was able to melt the ice because his feelings for Yoh "burns with imense heat" ^^; . Yeah it's corny, but at least it's an explanation. The dub gives no explanation.
So close to Patch village, with such a large group of Shamans watching them... the fight was ALREADY official. In the dub, Yoh "decides" to make it offical.
Some WONDERFUL dialoug at the end between Pino and Yoh during there final attacks was changed to the two... just explaining there attacks. Originally, they were just giving the reasons for why they fight.
Why?
Because it's fun!
Also, Yoh was basically pushing the Iceman to get angry and go all out. So that way, when the Iceman lost, they would have no regrets about it. They did their best after all.
And now, for the stupidest change of all.
Pino at the end of the dub episode says he's "going home." Why is this stupid? PINO SHOWS UP HERE AND THERE IN VARIOUS FUTURE EPISODES >_< !!!!
Yep, this is one of the worst dub episodes of Shaman King.
The comparison is gonna take forever ;_; ....
EDIT: o.k the one good thing about this episode was that I found that I didn't mind Faust's new voice all that much. There was a nice difference between his calm voice, angry voice, and just plain creepy voice.
