Question for our Brittish friends

So, for those of you who are from England and who watch the dub of Shaman King....

How do YOU feel about Len's accent, and any of the other Brittish accents in the show?

I personally don't think they sound very natural, but I'm not British, so I would totally understand if my perception of the dub's accents is totally wrong.

How about some of the phrases that Len use?

Well, in my opinion it's really over done as far as accents go, My friend can do a really good impression of his accent but she sounds different when speaking normally and as for the phrases well, I have yet to here anyone at my school or any other teenager use the phrase 'old chap' or anything like that....and I've yet to hear Lenny or any other british charcter use phrases like 'quality' or 'enit' (we kinda get letters get dropped off words a bit here as well). That's just my opinion anyway, most people here don't have thick british accents as far as I know.

i feel the same way about fake french accents.
you can hear them trying to sound french. i guess i don't have a problem with len's brit accent, but i kinda do since he's originally chinese.

A friend of mine at school and I were discussing this, and I believe there might be some deep malice towards us Brits hidden somewhere in 4Kids.

After all, in just about EVERY 4Kids dub, there's a "gawdy" British accent.

The thing is, it wouldn't be such a bad thing if it wasn't so racist and terrible to listen to it. We Brits don't over-pronounce everything. In fact, the Northern people even omit lots of stuff, like the great Peter Kay, whose jokes are harder to get in the South, like "Has tha nought moist?" is hard to hear, and you even can hear stuff "I went down't mill t'other day", or "Just ger'on wirrit."

However, the American attempts at our accent are always so over pronounced.

We don't ORL-ways O-ver-pro-NOUNCE our SILL-ables. (I know this isn't proper grammar or spelling, but I'm just emphasising how our words are being pronounced.)

It's never fun being stereotyped, and I feel that if we can get a proper American to do our acting (Fawlty Towers), then surely 4Kids can get a proper English person to do their accents?

(Sorry for the rant, but I hate stereotyping!)

Varon/Valon/Baron/Balon (I always do this, because it could be any of these) is actually Australian, or SUPPOSED to be. Still, technically, you're right. Australians used to be Brits, before they turned into convicts and were exiled there, like my dear ancestors, the Stanfields.

It seems that any country that can speak some English has to be stereotyped, except America...

Aww Faulty Towers!! John cleese is one of my idols!! Him and the rest of the Pythons!!

I wouldn't mind Len having a brit accent if it was an actual Brit that did it! I've heard the guy that does Len's voice and I know he's not British. Hearing Noah on yugioh and that evil guy from Mew Mew Power is enough evidence that he should stick to his own language!

Ah-ha, there, you see? If Americans can tolerate Americans in English sitcoms, it's because they use real Americans.

I think the main problem is because America gives us so much of their language, that when we finally hear our accents heard on TV, it's a real blow, to hear it being done badly.

Kenni. What did you mean by Americans in Faulty Towers? (It's been WAY too long since I've seen the series) You were talking about the random actors that play guests at the hotel?

I'm referring, in fact, to an episode called "Waldorf Salad", in which an American actor appears as an American guest at the hotel, and chaos ensues as he tries to bring American "culture" to Basil's English nature.

But basically, the whole episode revolved around how Americans are somewhat better in getting things the way they want than English people. But instead of getting a English person to do a bad American accent, they actually got either a REAL American, or someone who had an impeccable accent.

Thanks for clearing that up. I musty not have seen that episode. I didn't catch the whole series since my PBS station moves their programming around after just about every telethon they do. And they do those things just about every other week it seems!! >_<

what i dont get is "len" and lyserg's voices, lyserg is from england but he sounds like a heavy smoker, "len" is from china and he sounds like someone from mary poppins.

In all honesty, the fact Ren sounds British is probably because 4kids asked his voice actor to sound "snobby and vain" and, he played around with the fake british accent thing, and 4kids just loved it. They probably thought it would accent his character.

I am not saying that is what should have been done, but it is what was done...

*I am sorta glad the US doesnt seem to want to give anyone stereotyped Canadian accents, although, most of the people here has such varied accents, I doubt it would offend many people.

It sounds nothing like an actual English person nowadays, though. XD Maybe in Victorian times. XD

And yes, all his stupid phrases would only ever be used by rich families about 200 years ago. ^^; The kind of 'tea-and-crumpets' kinda crap. XD

I think it does give a pretty good snobby, 'I'm-better-than-you' air, though.

Oh, and Lovely, it's not a double 't' in 'British'. ^^;
