"Zigfried Lloyd" was not much of a change at all - It was originally "Sieg Lloyd". "Zigfried" comes from the guy's real name, "Zigfried von Schroeder" (Siegfried von Schroider in the Japanese version).
I'm not sure what Marik's name is in the Japanese version...

Technically you could say Malik or Marik as you know, but it's believed that it was intended to be Malik, as Malik is Arabic for 'king'.

Yeah, hopefully you didn't lose your mind like I did. And Odion (what an idiotic name) was supposed to be Rashid while Ishizu (-_-) was supposed to be Isis. Why did those idiots dub those names when they're almost internationally known and are sometimes used for American children's names...

Where is the proof? As far as I know, I only hear that spelling from other fans.
I have not seen his name romanized as "Malik" (and yes, it MUST be romanized that way) on any official site.
Also, if it was Isis, wouldn't it be "Aishizu" in Japanese characters? (Isis is actually a Greek name for an Egyptian Goddess)

True, but one could always mess with the spelling and still have the reference. E.G. "Kul Elna" is based off of the real Egyptian village "Querna".

Rendering of Japanese names to English is done by a pronunciation basis instead of a spelling basis.

I never said it was officially Malik (Although there may be a Battle City scoreboard in the Japanese manga that spells it that way).
Another case of pronunciation over spelling would be the Yu-Gi-Oh card Fusioh Richie. The word Richie was originally Lich, but it is pronounced Richie, so the English card wrote Richie, even though it sounds like a guy's name.
The furigana on the Japanese card translates to 'Nosferatu Lich', a reference to the vampire film, but the Kanji is closer to the English card name.

If anyone has scanlations or a copy of the Japanese book and has a specific picture that states "Malik" in Roman characters, I would like to see that picture.
Who knows - VIZ may keep it untouched in its English versions anyway...
