Parents can be idiots. I found the Faust episodes to be a little disturbing (at least in the original) and I hate Manta so that is really saying something. Now, why didn't THAT make it into headlines and controversy? I mean, the Pokemon thing is rediculous! Well, I also know why SK isn't getting much contruversy (or general attention... ) is because it wasn't marketed very well. They didn't load a lot (or any, I think) comersials. Heh, I can picture a commercail right now: These two kids are in a cheaply made graveyard kid1: Boy, it sure is spooky in here. Kid2: ...... Huh? OH! OH! Uhhh... Kid 2 reads script Kid2: Yeah Kid1: Hey, look I think I see a grost.. I mean ghost! this guy covered in flour gets lowered down on ropes Kid2:........ Kid2 reads script Kid2: AHHHH Ghost: relax, I'm good Kid1: SHAMAN KING RULES! really cheesy announcer: SO WATCH SHAMAN KING! AND BUY THE ACTION FIGURES! Kid1: can I go home now? I got a wife to go to at home Kid2: Yeah, and I need to piss... ...... Yeah, I have an evil mind Strange. That seems very, very close to something I said on the 4Kids forums on a thread by s91. >>

Umm, I hate to be rude, Sayoky, but this thread is about parents complaining about TV shows and other stuff that is not "proper" for their children, not about parents complaining for their children to do something.
Meh, I'm too lazy to look over the thread, but here are my irrevelant thoughts anyways:
Parents should test to see if their children are capable and smart enough of handling "mature" content, humor, whatever. If they can, good. If they cannot, you may shield them, but you do not have to ban or block or censor it for everyone.

Of course, there's the positive side of things. In this week's Sunday NYTimes article "The Newest Stars of Japanes Anime, Made in America"

Or you can at least make it available for paying consumers.
Personally, I think Shaman King's a positive example of multiculturalism. Today's NYT (Sunday) had this article all about how Japanese pop culture is still dismissive or worse towards minorities like African Americans and the Ainu.

For an example of that, may I direct you to the fact that the anime turned Horohoro into a piece of comic relief on more than one occasion? (Whereas in the manga he has a well thought out backstory and gets CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT once they're in America and have picked up Lyserg. Apollo and Bluebell, anyone? Horohoro explaining his beliefs in detail? Yeah. Compare those three chapters to the one crap episode they gave him in the anime, and you'll see the reason for my desperate scanlation search.)
The entire thing with the Ainu makes me want to kill something. (Mostly the fact that the "Former Aborigine Protection Act" ever existed, let alone the fact that it was on the books until 1997.) The fact that the fanbrats still scream "LEEK AHMG JAPAN IS TEH BETTERS!!!*" makes me want to torture something to death.
And we get no parents complaining about the fact that anime is teaching their kids racism. I wonder why? Maybe because everyone looks white in most mainstream series? That said, why hasn't anyone complained about the Patch being stereotypes? Or Chocolove?
For some reason, this makes me miss Static Shock.

Well, but most anime is based around Japanese characters stylized to the point where fashion and hairstyles are the key points of identification. I thought it was pretty ambigious myself until I picked up this photo book called Fruits, which has all these Japanese teens and young adults dressed all funky and with hairstyles/colors straight out of anime. I dig Chocolove too. I love that there's a team of powerful good guy shamans all from outside Japan proper. Team the Ren is compromised of "Others" but they're all heroes and individuals first. And Chocolove's the most prominent American character from what I've gathered so far. And there's the Patch mixed in as well. I haven't seen much of them but it's gotta be an improvement over Dragonball which has sambos and pickaninnies and a vaguely NativeAm village and so got me dropping the manga. Chinese characters tend to be somewhat exotic in manga/anime or handled dismissively. I like seeing the wide variety of people working together and actual references towards culture and proper pronunciation. I don't think I ever saw Shampoo referred to as Xian Pu in R1/2. The article I mentioned before goes into how Japanese hip-hop fans are more respectful and there is progress being made in that group... which is seeping into manga and anime slowly and surely. Asian markets in general tend to be the excuse for black movies not receiving major funding (As in "Our research shows that Treasure Planet will not do well in our Asian markets if we keep Jim Hawkins black"). Not only that, there's alot of things like Disney's Song of the South and the Sambo books which still pervade Japanese culture. That's why the white (or Jackie Chan, for that matter)/black cop duo was invented because Hollywood insists that a white person translates better in Asia and US audiences are more accustomed to diversity. Variety reported that Haunted Mansion opening at the top of the Japanese box office was a surprise. But it shouldn't have been, because the Japanese have that ride in their Disneypark. Would the movie be much different or better with some white guy? Probably not, but it is a postive thing for overseas audiences supposedly uninterested in watching black leads. And now, on to Static. I loved that show too. What gets me is that it never got toys. For children's programming, that's a big market. The stuff that hits toy shelves are more likely to have token, secondary black characters and not leads. On top of that, the specialty superhero toys have yet to make a Static either, because they're too busy making stupid 50s Batman sidekicks no longer used in the comics. If Static had been a toy franchise it could have gone on forever like Batman has. There's pretty much been some sort of new Batman show on tv ever since I was 12 or so- would it have killed the toy sales that much if Batman Beyond had been black, or even a Batwoman or something? Um yeah, in short, I think Japan and the US have problems with this but I always appreciate those who push forward.
